Stranded Kitten Struggling To Stay Afloat In The Gulf Of Mexico Is Saved In The Nick Of Time
The last place you would expect to see a kitten is surely afloat in a body of water even if it's true that when a fishing crew sets off on a fishing trip, they expect to encounter many unforeseen situations. Seriously though, saving a kitten from drowning in the rough waters of the Mexican Gulf is definitely not one of them.

But that is exactly what happened to one Alabama boat crew. They were fishing around Perdido Pass when they spotted a little kitten struggling to keep afloat in the restless waters.
Fishing trip immediately turned into a rescue a kitten mission- luckily a successful one. The kitten is safe and sound now.
No one can say how the little kitty got into the water since they don’t really like baths, or water. The mystery of the kitten's origins may remain a mystery, but we're still grateful to know the kitten is safe and sound now.
A fishing boat crew noticed a kitten struggling for his life in open waters.
Still Flyin Charters crew were on one of their regular charter fishing trips when they saw a creature they never imagined they could see in the water. Their first guess was that it was a sea turtle, but they quickly realized that this “turtle” had red fur.
They immediately got her out of the water and into the boat.
“We were fishing just outside Perdido Pass when I spotted something struggling to stay up and getting sucked out into the gulf. We immediately pulled in our lines and maneuvered over to it.
Positioned ourselves down current of the cat and used a dip net for bait to pick him up,” Steve Crews, owner of Still Flyin Charters, says about the incident.
The poor little cat was scared and shocked, and the crew was committed to protecting him until they reached the coast. “He was shaken at first. It took him a little bit to get his wits about him. I held him in my lap and drove the boat until he started to come to. Then one of the kids fishing held him for a while,” Crews recalls.
“I think we just did what anyone else would’ve done. We just happened be at the right place at the right time. He wouldn’t have made it otherwise”
“Our catch of the day”: after rescuing the little cat, the crew posted this amazing story on Facebook
People hypothesized that the poor little cat might have dumped in the water by a ruthless owner or even used as shark bait, while the boat crew thinks he just got caught in the tide. None of the theories can be proven, and the important thing now is that the story has a happy ending.
The lucky cat went home with the man who found him and later found his forever home
After the boat reached the harbor, Steve Crews took the kitty to his home. He and his wife soon realized that the cat was actually frightened when inside and favored being outside. They managed to find a forever home for the kitty, and he’s gradually getting used to it.
“Initially, he came home with me, but he didn’t want to be inside. My friend ended up taking him home since he lives in an area where the cat is safer outside.
He’s doing great. He’s still a feral cat. We will see if that changes over time, but he’s still really skittish of people,” he stated.
The kitten’s unusual rescue provided much inspiration for his name. Some of the suggestions were: Nemo, Sailor, Catfish to Ocean, but Crews and his wife had two of favorites of their own: Shark Bait and Lucky.
They finally agreed on Shark Bait, but they are not sure if the new owner continued using it.
