They've got jobs and school and families and hobbies and college stress and training sessions and just because they aren't working full-time, it doesn't mean they're not trying.
This is awfully hard for some adults to grasp. This teacher, however, gets it; when he saw a student using his class to catch up on sleep, instead of waking her up and giving her detention, he posted a thread on Twitter that has since gone viral. He's since been applauded for his perspective, as he should be!

He points out that she wasn't in someone else's room, that she was in his. And while sleeping in class shouldn't become the new norm, taking into account someone chewing like hell after biting off a lot should be allowed for.

"I think too often the biggest thing that people forget about high school students is that they are kids," says Syrie. "They're kids — kids who are having to grow up way too fast and are having way too much pressure put on them, in and out of school ... even for our best and brightest, that pressure gets to be too much."
Syrie continues his thread
So, as it turns out, you don't need to rule with an iron fist in order to have obedient charges. Refreshingly compassionate, I can think of some other teachers that could heed this message (namely, my grade 5 teacher that would make us write out sums 200 times if we got them wrong).
