It's no secret that Putin has been trying to gain control over Ukraine since his rise to power. Western countries, including the United States as well as the European Union, have been trying to mediate the situation to no avail.
Just this January, diplomats from the US, EU, and Russia have worked tirelessly to avert an impending war between the two. All through those talks, Russian representatives insist that the country has no plans to invade Ukraine.
They also refused Putin's demands to bar Ukraine's wish to join NATO among other things. Since then, the tension between the two countries has significantly grown and other heads of state such as French president, Emmanuel Macron, have flown to Moscow and Kyiv to facilitate diplomacy.
While mediations are still ongoing, Putin releases a statement that the fight in Donbas between the Ukrainian military and the Russian-backed separatists is genocide perpetrated by the Ukrainians.
On the 21st of February, he officially deployed almost 200,000 Russian troops in Donbas under the guise of peacekeeping. 3 days later, he launched a full-blown assault on Ukrainian territory.
This is the largest military operation (see war) in Europe since World War II. Since then, brave Ukrainian men and women led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, have been tirelessly defending their beloved country.
