Oh, you didn't know?
Radium is a deadly metal, and a small amount is enough to wreak havoc in your body, but that didn't stop people in the past. They used it everywhere.
Apart from ingesting lethal doses of radium, people were painting their fingernails, face, and teeth with this deadly self-luminous paint.
I guess we should be glad those days are over, because, can you imagine what that would have done today? Exposure to radium, for longer periods of time, can cause bone and lung cancer.
Higher doses of radium causes broken teeth, cataracts, anemia, and reduced bone growth! It's that serious yet people were using it like makeup in the past.
There was even a line of cosmetics called Tho-Radia that contained radium and thorium! That's a lot of radium to digest, honestly.
Apart from radium, people used a lot of lead and uranium too! Back in the 50s, a child's science kit came with uranium.
Uranium also causes cancer if exposed to large amounts. Now here are some things that were acceptable 100 years ago that are unacceptable today.
