Teacher Posts Tips On How To Save Your Life During A Lockdown
If you live somewhere that is prone to earthquake you've probably gone through the drill of "drop, cover, hold" teaching you to drop to the ground, cover yourself with a table or something sturdy, and then essentially just hold on for dear life.
While this tactic applies reasonably well for earthquakes, it may not work for other things you've been taught. Thanks to an insanely helpful twitter thread written by user "V" you can now learn real tips on how to deal with active shooters at your school. workplace, or even out in public.
She talks us through a lot of things she learned in training but probably the most important one: DON'T HIDE UNDER A TABLE.
This is Twitter user, V, who decided to share some tips from her Active Shooter Training Course

It was this training that made her realize that many people might not know things that seem simple, but could definitely save lives

After people called her out for her "likely" comment, she felt the need to explain herself with this statement...
Believe it or not, around 40,000 people were killed in shooting incidents in the USA alone. While that is an insane number of people to be harmed V did admit in an interview that is was possibly an exaggeration.
“It’s been a mixed response. Most folks were upset about the “likely” tweet,” she said. “In hindsight, saying “likely” was an exaggeration.”

That being said, the fact the workplaces are teaching their employees about shooter training is a sad, but much needed reality.
V says the teaching helped her a lot in her job as a teacher. “I’m a science teacher. I absolutely love my job,” She said. “I feel safe at work but the training definitely gave me some solid steps to follow if I was ever in that kind of situation because, before the training, I would’ve gotten under the table.”

So here are the tips she posted in the thread, that might actually save your life when you get into a fight-or-flight situation

Firstly, as simple as it sounds, just breathe. Your brain needs oxygen to function correctly

It's easy to think that hiding away and waiting quietly will help you but odds are, it won't. You need to ACT

So what if you can't escape? Next option: Barricade.

This is where you need to do a bit more thinking, but learning these tricks ahead of time will help you if you ever actually need to remember them.

A door closer could be your best friend

IMPORTANT: Do NOT stand directly in front of the door!

You might feel a bit hopeless arming yourself with a stapler or a hard covered book but anything is better than nothing.

Here we come back to what I mentioned at the start. Find out WHY

Lastly in this scenario: Counter.

The two seconds it takes the shooter to realize you're not where you should be could be the two seconds that save your life.

Sounds stupid but could throw them off, and that's what you need!

Also very important if you're not familiar with guns. Do NOT grab the front of the muzzle.

Attack, but be safe about it. You don't want to be caught off-guard by the second weapon, but don't be caught with it either.

Now for the last option: Survive.

I actually did not know this! Brilliant tips because almost any girl will carry either a tampon or a pad on her at all times, just in case.

Also brilliant. If you think you have nothing, think again.

And remember, it's going to be hard but just, BREATHE...

5 minutes might seem like a long time stuck in a science lesson, but 5 minutes is nothing when you're afraid for your life.

If you take away anything from this, just remember that desk are NOT your friend.

Spread this knowledge, keep your friends safe!
