Ellen DeGeneres' fall from grace wasn't nice. It happened during the 'cancel culture' age, and it came down to an expose by Buzzfeed, which dove into the politics at play behind the scenes at The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
The talk show host who was "canceled" has talked about her cancellation from the entertainment industry, asserting that the situation would be different if she said nothing at all. Fans loved her for 17 seasons out of the 19 seasons that the chat show aired, and it was extremely successful.
However, it ended abruptly in May 2022 due to claims of racism, sexual misconduct, and intimidation by three of the show's senior producers. It was her second kick out from the entertainment industry.
The first occurred in the 1990s when her comedy Ellen, which ran from 1996 to 1998, was canceled after she came out as gay to the public. In 2020, a former Black staffer of The Ellen DeGeneres Show spoke with the newspaper and disclosed that she had received numerous racist remarks.
"Whenever I brought up an issue to my white male boss, he would bring up some random story about some random Black friend that he had and how they managed to get over stuff. He would use his black friend as some way to say, ‘I understand your struggle'. But it was all performative bull****," she said.
Ellen DeGeneres claimed to have been kicked out of show business
It's important to note that DeGeneres wasn't the subject of the remarks, but as another former worker noted:
"If she wants to have her own show and have her name on the show title, she needs to be more involved to see what's going on."
The comedian has embarked on a new comedy tour
The 66-year-old has now returned to stand-up comedy and opened out about life after her talk show, but she promises to retire after 2024. The reason behind DeGeneres' belief that she was kicked out was based on the previous catchphrase of the program.
Ellen DeGeneres opens up about her exile from showbiz
"The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind, that was the headline. Here's the problem - I am comedian who got a talk show and I ended the show every day by saying, 'be kind to one another'. Had I ended my show by saying 'go f*** yourselves', people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I'm kind."
Certainly, one former employee who discussed it with the publication at the time stated: "That bullsh*t about being kind only occurs when the cameras are rolling. Everything is merely for display."
The TV chat show host has been shrouded in controversy ever since
Even though Ellen denied knowing about the accusations and the producers were fired, the show's reputation was irreversibly damaged. Since the controversy, Ellen has kept quiet and only sporadically worked on projects like the Discovery Channel documentary Saving the Gorillas: Ellen's Next Adventure.
However, the comedian is currently on Ellen's Last Stand, her new comedy tour.
She appears to have chosen to address the controversy surrounding The Ellen Show's cancellation with her first gig
“For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business. Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay," she added.
This was probably a reference to her sitcom from the 1990s, which was canceled after she came out as gay. Do share this article with your loved ones to get their thoughts about it.
