Bride Gets Ripped On Reddit For Speaking Over Her MIL's "Forbidden" Speech At Her Wedding
"This marriage is gonna suck."

Weddings are incredibly special events for all involved, but they can also bring the worst out in people. And, when Reddit user u/Character-Cow2577 got married, her big day wasn't short of drama.
Sharing her story in the AITA (Am I The A**hole?) subreddit, the OP explained that she hates speeches. So, when it came time for her wedding, the OP specifically requested there be no speeches on the day.
The OP says she and her husband had a small wedding with their closest loved ones. They had an amazing day, and their wedding planner organized some games which everyone enjoyed.
However, when dinner came out, things took a turn for the worst. The OP's MIL stood up and began giving a speech, even though she acknowledged that she was "forbidden" to do so.
So, the OP purposely continued to talk loudly with her bridesmaids over her MIL as she tried to deliver her speech. Her MIL was furious, and so were her SIL's and her new husband.
So much so that OP's husband refused to speak with her for the rest of the night, but the OP spent the rest of her wedding having fun with her friends and family, ignoring her husband and his.
The OP explained that her MIL is renowned for giving long and "mean" speeches, but now she's wondering if she was the a**hole here. Keep scrolling to see how people reacted.
The OP asked if she was the a**hole for not listening to her MIL's speech at her wedding.

She explained that she specifically requested there be no speeches at her wedding.

However, her MIL stood up and began making a speech at the reception, despite being "forbidden" to do so.

The OP and her bridesmaids continued to talk over the MIL and she became furious. OP's new husband was also angry.

Now the OP is wondering if she was the a**hole?

She went on to add that it wasn't unusual for her MIL to make extremely long and mean speeches.

Here's how people reacted.

"You have every right to have your wishes respected."

"Yeah, everyone sucks here."

"You asked her not to do one thing and she did it anyway."

ESH.

"You were rude and disrespectful to your husband."

"Immature on every side."

"I'm embarrassed for both of you ladies."

"You could have sucked it up and listened."

"This marriage is gonna suck."

NTA.

"You ruined your husband's wedding."

"You lowered yourself."

"Don't be so rude."

"Are you 15?"

What's your take on this situation? Do you think the OP overreacted, or should her MIL have been more respectful of OP's wishes for her special day?
Either way, a little bit of respect goes a long way, and sadly, it seems there is not much of it going around here. After all, it was the OP and her husband's special day, not her MIL's.
