Daughter Deals With Late Parents' Parasitic Neighbor Who Won't Return House Key And Attempts To Buy Their Truck For Half Its Price

Vultures in human form come out of the woodwork to circle a grieving family when they realize there is profit to be made. They strike during a vulnerable time to advance their own agendas.

A husband stepped in to fend off the neighbors of his wife's deceased parents. OP's parents-in-law passed away unexpectedly.

His wife was left to sort out their home and their belongings. His in-laws entrusted their neighbor with a copy of their house key.

They also helped OP's wife clean and sort through some of the stuff her parents left behind. Their short connection continued via text messages which revealed the neighbor's true intent.

The neighbor mentioned in passing that someone was interested in buying his in-law's truck for $15k. OP's wife thanked them for trying to get the truck started.

Her parents' neighbors made it seem like this buyer would be doing OP's wife a favor. For 15k, she would have one less thing to worry about and it would mean more money in her bank account.

Then, the neighbor mentioned some issues they noticed in the truck. While they were busy diagnosing the truck, they also took the food from the freezer and the canned food items which they gave to a nephew who was struggling.

Circling back to the truck, the buyer will shoulder the cost of the battery as long as OP's wife agreed to sell them the truck immediately

The other mechanical issues they saw were not an issue since this mysterious buyer was a very good mechanic

OP's wife said she will think about it. She was planning on taking the truck to a mechanic before trading it in anyway.

OP's wife asked for the keys to her parents' home and truck. The neighbor began unravelling and tried to guilt OP's wife by mentioning how her parents would have felt if they knew how she was treating the neighbors they trusted.

OP was incensed on behalf of his wife and called the neighbor out for speculating about his late in-laws' feelings.

OP also mentioned how insulting it was to get a lowball offer on his in-laws' truck

OP added that they weren't comfortable with strangers gaining access to the house when they aren't around. It also didn't inspire him to trust them when they were adamant on keeping a copy of the house key.

The neighbor didn't like how OP took over the conversation. They said this had nothing to do with him because it was his wife they were trying to help.

OP ended the conversation by making it clear to the neighbor that his wife can do whatever she wanted with the truck that was now hers. He also shamed her for bringing his wife's dead parents into the conversation.

This neighbor and the buyer were definitely trying to grift OP's wife. Why else would they be so angry when they can no longer manipulate her while she was emotionally vulnerable?

People like this neighbor are everywhere, sadly

They are not above scamming and stealing from families who just lost their loved ones

No fence or locked gate will stop them from taking things they feel like they deserve

They don't even feel remotely ashamed about it because they have somehow justified their behavior

Older people are particularly prone to vultures like their neighbor who are nice to them because they are hoping to be named in their wills once they pass

The neighbors tried so hard to push the narrative that they were just concerned citizens trusted by the deceased who are more than happy to lighten the grieving daughter's load

OP and his wife did the right thing by telling these people where they can go

Scammers are everywhere! How immoral are you to try to make a quick buck from a daughter who lost both of her parents in one fell swoop?

These neighbors should be ashamed of themselves, but it is highly doubtful that they have that kind of self-awareness. I hope they don't latch onto another older person in their neighborhood.
