Clothing has been different for men and women since the beginning of humanity. Traditionally, men have worn suits, and women have worn dresses, and that is considered normal and expected.

The attire for various occasions and locations varies. Swimsuits have their proper place and time, which is the pool and summertime.

Pajamas have their proper place and time, which is at night and in bed. It would be untrue to argue that clothing codes are pointless as there are clothes that are appropriate and inappropriate to wear.

Clothes have been used to oppress women historically as women's clothing has concealed femininity while also setting itself apart from men's attire. Many women today believe that being feminine is a sign of power and self-assurance rather than an attempt to attract attention to sex. 

Clothing regulations sow the seeds of victimization, slut-shaming, and feminine subjugation. Girls are taught that their bodies are like objects, easily attacked if they aren't covered up. 

It's as if a certain standard of neatness, sophistication, and class must be maintained in order to be "safe." Society is partial to women under its power, and a sort of control that exists is dress codes.

The OP of today's story was slut-shamed by her parent's neighbor. The OP was wearing a halter top and shorts when her parents introduced her to their 60-year-old neighbor.

The neighbor told the OP that she shouldn’t be wearing things like that, as it would give boys the wrong impression. Things went south when the OP admitted that she was actually white.

The OP writes

I might be the a-hole because I offended my neighbor and damaged the relationship between my neighbor and my parents.

OP's parents had the option to politely tell the neighbor that her actions were wrong and request that she apologize to their daughter, but instead, they chose to laugh it off as a humorous joke. Some Redditors say that if OP's parents are unwilling to be there for their children, then they shouldn't have kids.

Their neighbor had no right to call the OP a whore, and many Redditors found it offensive that her parents wanted her to apologize. Eventually, she was declared not the AH.
