Netflix Faces Backlash As Users Slam ‘Horrible’ New Update

by Damjan

If you’ve been spending time on streaming platforms lately, you might’ve noticed that Netflix looks a little different. And no, it’s not just you, it’s not a glitch or a temporary experiment. Netflix is in the middle of a big makeover that’s slowly rolling out to users around the world.

The new design, which started appearing on May 19, is part of Netflix’s effort to make the platform easier to use and to serve up better recommendations. At least, that’s what they’re promising on their official site.

But while the company might be aiming for a smoother experience, not everyone is thrilled with the update. Let’s break down what’s changed.

For starters, navigation is supposed to be simpler. Netflix has added shortcut buttons to help you find what you’re looking for faster. There’s also a stronger focus on personalized recommendations, something the platform already leaned on, but is now pushing even harder.

According to Netflix, these suggestions will update in real-time based on your viewing habits. One of the more noticeable features is the new “My Netflix” section.

Think of it as a catch-all hub: it stores shows and movies you’ve saved for later, lets you pick up where you left off, and puts all your activity in one place. In theory, that should make jumping back into a series or rewatching a favorite a bit more seamless.

They’ve also revamped how content is presented. You can now get more detailed information about a movie or series before hitting play, things like the plot summary, runtime, awards, cast, and whether it’s trending in the Top 10.

On paper, it sounds helpful, especially given how overwhelming it can be to scroll through endless titles without knowing what you’re getting into. But not everyone is buying into the changes.

On Reddit and other forums, users have been pretty vocal, and not in a good way. One Redditor didn’t hold back:

“It is HORRIBLE. wtf is even that? Once you start navigating down there is no way to go all the way up to choose series or films. Oh yeah. The only options you have in the new layout are Home, Series, Films, My Netflix. No categories no nothing. How do I change it or report it?”
Another chimed in: “Just opened up Netflix to this. It is so horrible and makes me actually uneasy trying to use it. It made me switch to find something on Prime instead. Good work, guys!”

The frustration seems to go beyond just visual changes. Many users feel like Netflix has stripped away features that made browsing easier, like the ability to explore content by genre or category.

That’s left people feeling stuck with a limited selection unless they know exactly what they’re searching for. Some subscribers are even talking about walking away from the platform altogether, at least for now.

One person put it bluntly: “I hate it with a burning passion. But they are fully committed to this new design, and there’s nothing anyone can say to change their minds at this point. The only thing they are going to pay attention to is their Daily Active Users metric, so if you want to send a message, then you just have to stop watching Netflix.”
They added: “If enough people did that, their execs just might take notice. I for one will definitely be taking a break from Netflix for a good long while.”

It’s still unclear if Netflix will adjust its new design in response to the backlash. The platform has made many changes over the years, some successful, others quickly dropped.

For now, this latest update is live, and early reactions suggest that many users aren’t happy. If those initial opinions hold, Netflix will need to work hard to win back trust and prove this new look is a step forward.
