Seven New Sonic the Hedgehog Cards Debut In the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection
Magic: The Gathering has a long history of bringing unexpected worlds into its cards, from iconic fantasy realms to surprising crossovers with pop culture favorites. Now, the game is diving into the fast-paced universe of Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” with three new card collections.
This latest collaboration gives fans of both franchises something special to look forward to: Sonic and friends, reimagined as Magic cards with striking original art. This isn’t just any ordinary release.
Magic is known for its “Secret Lair” drops - exclusive sets of cards offered for a limited time, often themed around beloved properties. These sets let Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Magic: The Gathering, create one-off card collections outside the game’s standard release cycles.
In this case, the team has worked closely with Sega to bring Sonic’s world to life in three distinct sets: “Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes,” “Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure,” and “Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear.”
In “Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes,” seven well-known Sonic characters take center stage. According to Wizards of the Coast’s description, “This drop features seven new designs that bring the amazing Sonic the Hedgehog characters to life.
Wizards of the Coast paired the new card designs with original art, including some from fan-favorite Sonic artists doing their first-ever work for Magic: The Gathering cards.” This means Sonic fans can expect fresh illustrations from artists who’ve captured the blue blur in other media, adding a layer of authenticity to the cards.
Sonic the Hedgehog

So, which characters are getting the Magic treatment? The set includes Sonic the Hedgehog himself, Super Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, and Knuckles the Echidna.
Each card features unique artwork and mechanics inspired by the characters’ traits and stories. For example, fans might see Sonic represented with abilities that echo his trademark speed, or Dr. Eggman depicted with tricks that cause chaos for opponents.
These kinds of playful references are part of what makes Secret Lair collaborations so popular. The other two collections, “Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure” and “Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear,” promise more of the same exciting crossovers, though specific card details haven’t been fully revealed yet.
However, these sets are expected to continue the pattern of capturing Sonic’s high-speed world in Magic’s strategic gameplay.

All three Sonic-themed Secret Lair sets will be available starting at 9 a.m. PT on July 14 through MagicSecretLair.com. Fans will have the option to pick between standard and foil editions of the cards, with prices set at $39.99 for the standard edition of “Friends & Foes” and $49.99 for the foil version.
“Chasing Adventure” and “Turbo Gear” will each be priced at $29.99 for the standard version and $39.99 for foil. It’s worth noting that these prices reflect the collectible nature of Secret Lair cards - they’re aimed at fans who appreciate both Magic gameplay and the art of limited-edition collectibles.
This Sonic crossover comes right after another big project for Wizards of the Coast: their “Final Fantasy” collection, made in partnership with Square Enix. Unlike the Sonic sets, which are limited to these special Secret Lair drops, the Final Fantasy cards were part of a broader Magic release, available in booster packs and more widely distributed.
The back-to-back announcements show that Magic is continuing to expand into different gaming universes, giving fans of both card games and video games new ways to engage with their favorite characters.
