Shocking DUI Footage of Mary Lou Retton Released
Bodycam footage from Mary Lou Retton’s DUI arrest has now been made public, shedding new light on the incident that first came to attention back in May. The video offers a clearer picture of what happened that night in an AutoZone parking lot in West Virginia - from the initial traffic stop to her emotional reaction after being taken into custody.
Retton, a former Olympic gymnastics champion and one of the most recognizable athletes of the 1980s, is seen wearing a bright yellow shirt and brown shorts as officers approach her vehicle. The footage, released Tuesday, shows her trying to follow instructions from the police during a field sobriety test.
Her mood quickly shifts between confused and frustrated as she attempts to comply. When asked to balance on one foot, Retton mutters,
“Oh my God,” under her breath. A few moments later, as the officer asks her to hold her position a little longer, she huffs in irritation and says, “Oh, come on.”
She appears unsteady and reluctant, clearly uncomfortable with the situation. During the stop, Retton tells the officer that she only has a driver’s license issued in Texas but doesn’t have it on her - instead, she presents a passport as identification.
She also refuses to take a breathalyzer test, fully aware that this decision would come with an added legal penalty.
The video captures the 57-year-old former Olympic star in a tense moment.
Despite her resistance, the officer places her under arrest. As she’s being handcuffed, Retton becomes visibly emotional and speaks to a woman nearby, saying,
“Oh my God, Gia. They think I’m drunk.”
The woman, seemingly a close friend or relative, tries to speak with the officers, but Retton is still taken into custody. Once at the station, the tension continues. Retton can be heard saying,
“I mean, really. …I know, you know [who I am],” hinting at her past fame and perhaps hoping for some leniency.
But the officers proceed with the usual procedure. Her mugshot, also released Tuesday, shows her visibly upset and appearing to have been crying. In parts of the footage from the station, she continues to break down.

Authorities released Mary Lou Retton’s mugshot on Tuesday.
According to the original police report, Retton had been driving erratically, with officers describing her Porsche as swerving “all over the roadway.” They also noted an open container of wine in the car at the time of the stop.
The charges, officially listed as “driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs,” resulted in her being fined $100. The arrest was not made public until later in May, and Retton addressed the matter briefly during a court appearance in June.

“I take full responsibility."
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said:
“I take full responsibility for my actions. What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry. I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.”

Since the footage was released, Retton’s team has stayed silent.
Since the footage came out, Retton’s team has remained silent. The video adds to an already troubling situation for the former Olympian, who was recently in the news for serious health problems.
Just last year, she was hospitalized with a rare form of pneumonia and received widespread public support during her recovery.

She appeared visibly emotional at several moments in the video.

This latest chapter in Mary Lou Retton’s story is a stark contrast to the triumphant image many still associate with her. Once a symbol of athletic excellence, she’s now seen struggling in a moment that unfolded fast and publicly.
The footage captures a woman unprepared for what’s happening, visibly shaken, and facing the immediate consequences of her choices, all while the camera rolls.
