Librarian Shares 28 Secrets After People-Watching For Years

by Ariana

Libraries are special places. As a kid, they almost seemed magical. There was a mystery about them. This special places that housed all this history, all these stories... it was something else.

Then, as we get older, they can lose a little bit of that magic. Maybe it's the countless hours in college libraries working on papers or the group projects... either way, libraries didn't seem as special to me as I got older.

It wasn't until I took my 3 year old daughter to our local library a few months ago that I remembered how cool libraries are. Seeing it through a child's eyes was awesome and the magic was definitely back.

Luckily, a librarian from Scotland, @grumpwitch, has shared some of the observations she has made as a librarian. She's explained some of the seriously cool stuff that happens and some of the sad realities she has noticed. Librarians are seriously underrated people and these points are awesome.

I worked in public libraries for 26 years. You have just written my day-to-day working life. 😊👍🏻

This has made me feel homesick for the library in my old neighbourhood.

I grew up wanting to be a librarian as I loved the learning in a space and the peace! Hard to believe for me as a chatterbox but reading this totally makes sense as a library is so much more to a community...thanks so much for sharing @Charlotteli_H

As someone who basically spent 3months there EVERY single day for 3hrs, I now feel terrible that I finished the project and am only there for a few hours periodically now. I wish I could just send my feet for foot traffic.

It was also the only place where kids from "RESPECTABLE" homes who were being abused could go, aside from school, to be away from those parents for a couple of hours. Also to hide from other kids who bully them. I think I'm still here because I could read on the hidden windowsill

One of my favourite places in my school. I made friends with the librarians and they'd let me lock myself in at lunchtime while they went for their lunch. The whole thing to myself for 25 minutes!

As a librarian I can identify with most of these things. People underestimate the power of a library and its staff. Use us or lose us good people

Wonderful summary of what libraries are all about. I used to spend all my time in the local library when I was a teenager. This brings it all back to me, especially the friendship and mentoring of the librarian.
