Emmy was found stuck in the middle of a blizzard, skinny, cold, and trying to survive without food or water. The kind of situation that sounds impossible until you see the photos of her curled up in snow just to stay alive.

She was left on her own, and by the time rescue got involved, it was already the bitter stretch of December 23. P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue teamed up with the shelter, hauled her to an emergency vet clinic, and posted updates that were equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful. Emmy arrived severely underweight, with skin issues, pressure sores, and dental needs, plus the unsteady way her feet carried her.

And somehow, after all that, she spent Christmas tucked into a onesie with Alex and Chris, proving she still had fight in her.

By the afternoon of December 23, Emmy was finally under a warm blanket at the ER vet, and her “curled up and covered in snow” moment was already starting to fade.

The rescue group P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue swiftly partnered with the shelter to provide the much-needed help Emmy required. They quickly transported the poor senior dog, estimated to be around 8 to 9 years old, to the emergency vet clinic. On Facebook, they shared the heartbreaking state Emmy was in. “We cannot imagine the confusion, heartbreak, and bitter cold this girl has endured,” they expressed.

Emmy was rescued on the morning of December 23. By that afternoon, she was already tucked under a warm blanket at the vet's clinic, with a team trying to stabilize her condition and warm her up.

Relaying her progress, P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue posted: “This morning she was curled up and covered in snow trying to stay warm and alive. Look at sweet Emmy now, resting comfortably at the ER vet and relieved she’s not out in the frigid temperatures anymore. She is maintaining her body temperature – a big victory! She is also the nicest girl.”

A detailed examination of Emmy revealed the extent of her neglect. She was severely underweight, had skin problems, and needed extensive dental work. The presence of pressure sores indicated she had been confined in a cage for an extended period. She also showed unsteadiness on her feet. But despite her predicament, there was a silver lining. Emmy tested negative for heartworms and seemed to bask in all the love and attention she was receiving—a testament to her resilient spirit.

Once P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue shared her exam findings, it became clear the neglect was not just cold weather, it was days and days of being trapped and ignored.

And it’s the same kind of compassion as the woman who wrapped her own jacket around a trembling freezing dog.

After a day of treatment, Emmy’s mobility improved enough that she could be curious, take food gently, and even learn how to climb into laps.

Emmy made significant strides after spending a day at the vet. As P.O.E.T. updated on Facebook, "Her steadiness and mobility have improved, but she is still walking slowly. She is very curious and enjoys being with people. She takes her food gently, knows 'sit', how to jump onto the sofa, and climb into laps."

Thankfully, Emmy had company for Christmas. After her stay at the vet, she moved to a foster home with Alex and Chris. She spent her holiday snug in a onesie, mingling with Alex and Chris's other dogs.

P.O.E.T. shared, "Last night she got a bath, jammies, and slept in bed with her foster family. She didn’t move an inch all night – I’m sure she thought she was dreaming and scared to wake up… but this is your new life, sweet girl!"

Then came the best part, she moved to foster care with Alex and Chris, and Christmas found her cozy in a onesie instead of buried in snow.

As the New Year approaches, P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue expresses gratitude for the support they've received and sends good wishes to Emmy.

Their New Year message read, "Thank you all for supporting Emmy! Her journey is just beginning, and she still has a long road to get healthy and well. Emmy is ending 2022 with wagon rides and sitting warm indoors wherever she fits (if she can fit, she sits). We cannot imagine how her 2022 was before rescue and are so happy she’s going into the New Year with us."

In a few weeks, Emmy will be ready to foster again, and the hope is that her next family will be her permanent home.

Emmy didn’t just survive the storm, she earned a holiday with people who finally showed up.

If you think Emmy’s rescue was unbelievable, see how a senior dog froze in the cold and got saved like a Christmas miracle.
