Dog Abandoned In Blizzard Spends Days Braving The Cold In The Snow

In the middle of a freezing blizzard, a pit bull mix named Emmy was left to fend for herself in Ecorse, Michigan. She was abandoned by her family in the cold, leaving the poor old girl to try and keep warm by curling into a ball. It's a sad reminder of how often pets are dumped and left to struggle alone.

Emmy, skinny and on her own, was left without food or water in the bitter cold. All she could do was try to keep herself warm in the snow.

It's believed that she was tossed out of a car just before Christmas, a time when families should be together and celebrating, not leaving their pets out in the cold. She spent a day and a half alone in the snow until the Friends Of The River Rouge Animal Shelter learned of what was happening.

They found Emmy hidden under a blanket of snow. Her story is a grim reminder of what abandoned animals endure and why we need to treat our pets better.

“Animals are freezing to death outside in this weather,” Friends Of The River Rouge Animal Shelter posted on Facebook. “We were lucky to be alerted to one such dog yesterday in time to save her, but she wouldn’t have lasted much longer.”

The rescue group P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue swiftly partnered with the shelter to provide the much-needed help Emmy required. They quickly transported the poor senior dog, estimated to be around 8 to 9 years old, to the emergency vet clinic. On Facebook, they shared the heartbreaking state Emmy was in. “We cannot imagine the confusion, heartbreak, and bitter cold this girl has endured,” they expressed.

Emmy was rescued on the morning of December 23. By that afternoon, she was already tucked under a warm blanket at the vet's clinic, with a team trying to stabilize her condition and warm her up.

Relaying her progress, P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue posted: “This morning she was curled up and covered in snow trying to stay warm and alive. Look at sweet Emmy now, resting comfortably at the ER vet and relieved she’s not out in the frigid temperatures anymore. She is maintaining her body temperature – a big victory! She is also the nicest girl.”

A detailed examination of Emmy revealed the extent of her neglect. She was severely underweight, had skin problems, and needed extensive dental work. The presence of pressure sores indicated she had been confined in a cage for an extended period. She also showed unsteadiness on her feet. But despite her predicament, there was a silver lining. Emmy tested negative for heartworms and seemed to bask in all the love and attention she was receiving—a testament to her resilient spirit.

Emmy made significant strides after spending a day at the vet. As P.O.E.T. updated on Facebook, "Her steadiness and mobility have improved, but she is still walking slowly. She is very curious and enjoys being with people. She takes her food gently, knows 'sit', how to jump onto the sofa, and climb into laps."

Thankfully, Emmy had company for Christmas. After her stay at the vet, she moved to a foster home with Alex and Chris. She spent her holiday snug in a onesie, mingling with Alex and Chris's other dogs.

P.O.E.T. shared, "Last night she got a bath, jammies, and slept in bed with her foster family. She didn’t move an inch all night – I’m sure she thought she was dreaming and scared to wake up… but this is your new life, sweet girl!"

As the New Year approaches, P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue expresses gratitude for the support they've received and sends good wishes to Emmy.

Their New Year message read, "Thank you all for supporting Emmy! Her journey is just beginning, and she still has a long road to get healthy and well. Emmy is ending 2022 with wagon rides and sitting warm indoors wherever she fits (if she can fit, she sits). We cannot imagine how her 2022 was before rescue and are so happy she’s going into the New Year with us."

In a few weeks, Emmy will be ready to foster again, and the hope is that her next family will be her permanent home.
