Mother Buys Lavish Gifts For Married Son, Then Ruins Family Christmas By Not Showing Up
Before we find what happened to this Redditor, who apparently deleted his account, let's talk a little about what people expect when they get married/marry the love of their lives.
First and foremost, people expect to be treated with respect and dignity, they expect fair treatment. You can't forget your daughter-in-law (especially if she's married to your son for two years) when you buy gifts for the rest of the family.
This is the situation our Redditor was in and since we don't know his name, for the sake of simplicity, we'll call him Alpha. Alpha had no idea the kind of hell he was going to experience after confronting his mom about her gift-buying tendencies.
Usually, people are happy when their loved ones spoil them with gifts and stuff, but in the case of Alpha, it was only him who received the gifts, not his wife nor his one-year-old son.
At first, he didn't think it was bad, but after realizing that this hurt his wife, he decided to speak to his mom.
He said, "My mom was totally shocked and couldn't believe my wife expected a gift. I tried to explain that my wife is part of the family now, but my mom was upset and said she has three kids and shouldn't have to pretend my wife is her kid."
Obviously, after this confrontation, his mom didn't show up for Christmas dinner, and his two sisters blamed him for destroying family Christmas. smh.
We'll let him explain...
This is how it all began...

Apparently Alpha's wife was an "entitled child"

She mailed his gift back to him.

The sisters, in the end, blamed him for ruining family Christmas.

What the world thought...
Well, according to the world, Alpha wasn't an a-hole for supporting his wife and taking her side. I'm not sure if you agree, but I believe if you're going to gift your married son, why not buy something for his partner and child too?
It doesn't have to be a lavish gift, but a little something to help them feel like they're part of the family, right? What I can't digest is that she didn't think of buying a gift for her son's wife, but what about her grandson?
Well, a lot of people supported OP and since we can't display over 2,500 comments, we'll show you the 20 best that stole the show.
Alpha's lucky to escape family drama.

Grandchild also gets no gifts for Christmas.

She's an absolutely controlling mother.

This is emotional manipulation.

Alpha's mom ruined family Christmas.

Others thought Alpha's mother threw his family under the bus.

Here's another person who thinks mom ruined family Christmas.

People still don't understand why there's nothing for the grandchild...

Meanwhile a few think mom's right. Gifts shouldn't be demanded.

Others think OP handled this poorly...

Here's a valid question.

But most people agree that OP was right.

A demanded gift is a tribute.

Alpha's mother has to change and accept.

Others think that Alpha's wife needs to manage her expectations...

Maybe Alpha's family is narcisstic...

OP's mom is a drama queen...

Others think OP was manipulated and abused.

While some think that maybe Alpha's mom is autistic.

Finally, Alpha's sisters are spoiled brats.

Well, we're sure OP's feeling better.

In Summary...
I'm not sure if you agree, but if you're getting gifts for your grown kid, you might as well get some token gifts for your kid's family. These token gifts don't have to be lavish, but a little something to make people feel like they're part of the family.
What do you think? Was OP wrong to confront his mom, or was he right to stand up for his family?
