Heartwarming Story Of Blind Dog Getting Excited About Sensing Her Favorite Person
Grace is 12 years old, and her world is built on touch, sound, and pure trust. This blind senior dog was dealt a tough hand after a painful eye condition, but her spirit never got the memo.
Her mom, Shelby Salmela, shared that Grace’s eyes were removed so she could stay comfortable and pain-free, and somehow Grace still navigates her home like she’s got a map in her head. The real heart-melter is how Grace reacts to Shelby and even Shelby’s mother, rushing in with the same excitement she had before she lost her sight.
It’s the kind of bond that makes you wonder how love can stay so loud, even when the lights go out.
Meet Grace, a senior dog who is blind but will be the star of this adorable story.
Grace is now twelve years old, but a few years ago, she was diagnosed with a painful eye condition that eventually caused her to lose her sight. As a recommendation from her vet, unfortunately, both of Grace’s eyes were removed during a surgical procedure.
“We ultimately knew it was the best way to keep Grace comfortable and pain-free,” said Shelby Salmela, Grace's mom. One surprising thing about Grace is that she never lost her sense of direction after losing her vision.

Shelby is seen here cuddling Grace like nothing has changed, because it basically hasn’t.
Grace has always shared a special bond with her owner, and it’s clear that their bond hasn’t changed since Grace lost her vision. In fact, it’s surprising that she still has the same kind of reaction to her owner despite not being able to see her.
When she was able to see, she would run up to her owner with all her happiness, but nothing has changed since losing her vision. Grace actually had a really special relationship with Shelby's mother, and it was amazing to see that this didn’t change after she lost her sight.

As you can see here, there is no change in how Grace approaches Shelby's mom, and it's amazing to see.
We could watch her videos all day; they are so cute.
This adorable photo shows just how much they love each other.
In some ways, not being able to see her grandma could keep her even closer in her heart.

When Shelby Salmela talks about Grace’s surgery, you can feel how scary that change must have been, and then Grace acts like nothing has shifted at all.
The moment Grace curls up with Shelby, you realize the cuddles are basically her new version of “running up with all her happiness.”
Grace’s story echoes Echo the deaf, limited-sight dog, and the toddler who still took him for a walk.
The Emotional Intelligence of Dogs
Dogs possess remarkable emotional intelligence, which allows them to sense their owners' emotions. They can read human body language and vocal tones, providing them with insight into our emotional states. This ability is especially pronounced in disabled dogs, who develop heightened sensitivity to their owners' cues.
By fostering this bond, pet owners can enhance their connection with their furry companions. Engaging in positive reinforcement training and spending quality time together can help strengthen this relationship, leading to a more fulfilling experience for both parties.
And then there’s Shelby’s mom, because Grace still approaches her the same way, like the familiar presence is stamped into her senses.
The unconditional love that animals provide can be incredibly healing for humans, offering a sense of purpose and companionship that is deeply enriching. This connection often motivates owners to improve their pets' quality of life. This may include mobility aids or sensory stimulation tools, which can significantly enhance their well-being and happiness.
We love how cute little Grace is, and her love makes her even better.
“Grace’s grandma, my mom, moved out of state three years ago, so we probably only see her six times a year,” Salmela said. “But Grace is very attached to her. We FaceTime daily, and even when she hears my mom’s voice, she gets excited.”

By the time you see those adorable videos and photos of Grace reacting to her favorite people, it’s impossible not to get emotional about how close they still are.
This is such a heartwarming story that we absolutely love to hear. We can't imagine how little Grace must feel, and her grandma probably feels so special to be the one who gets her all excited despite her disabilities.
This just goes to show that you can do anything, even with impairments.
The heartwarming connection between the blind dog and her owner serves as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary impact that animals have on our emotional well-being. This story showcases how a dog's enthusiasm for sensing their favorite person transcends physical limitations, illustrating the depth of companionship that can flourish even in the face of adversity.
By embracing the unique needs of disabled pets, owners can cultivate a nurturing environment that enriches both their lives and their pets' experiences. Strategies such as dedicated training and the use of supportive aids not only enhance the quality of life for these animals but also foster a profound and rewarding relationship that uplifts the human spirit.
Grace didn’t lose her favorite person, she just found a new way to feel her even closer.
