Unfair Parents Cry Foul When They Were Called Out For Missing Their Son's Wedding Because Their Daughter Was Upset That Her Dog Was Sick
Some family disappointments hit harder than others, and this one landed on a wedding day. OP thought his parents had finally learned not to let his sister's drama steal another milestone, but that promise did not last long.
He had already watched them miss basketball games and even his graduation because his sister did not want to go or was having a bad day.
Instead, a voicemail, a sick dog, and a very upset sister turned the whole day upside down. Now the internet is weighing in on whether OP went too far by posting the fallout for everyone to see.
On the day of OP's wedding, his mom left a voicemail — she said they won't be attending his wedding because his sister's dog was sick and she was upset
OP was very hurt by this last-minute news. The day was not ruined thanks to OP's best friend, who was also his best man, who asked OP's bride if he could take videos of the wedding and post them on social media as a gift.
They went to a lakeside cabin for their honeymoon where there was no cell service. OP was in the dark about his best friend's gift until they got back from the honeymoon.
The video was still shots of wedding moments where you would typically see the newlyweds next to both sets of parents. The background music was the voicemail from OP's mom while OP was cutting the cake and happily dancing in the pictures.
It was completed with the caption: My best friend. He is an amazing person even if his parents NEVER showed up for him."
OP received hundreds of messages while he was away. Both sides of the family were asking him to delete the video.
Apparently, his sister hasn't stopped crying and his mom is refusing to leave the house. OP didn't take the video down immediately after being made aware of it nor did he contact his family.
He waited until his vacation time was officially over and enjoyed the bliss of his newlywed life. OP's dad told him to delete the video because "it was just a bad night for them."
He promised to make it up to OP and his wife for not making it to their wedding. OP asked him how he planned to do that since the wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event.
He reminded him that they chose to ignore his concerns about this happening. His dad just repeated his answer and OP told him that he will only delete the video once they made up for missing his wedding then promptly ended the call.

You can read the whole disaster unfold in OP's own words below:

The wedding day:

The parents skipped their son's wedding to deal with their daughter's upset dog, and that choice says a lot about how this family works.
This is where the family pattern really starts to show.
That's some video caption:

Parents asked OP to take down the video

OP asks if he is wrong

That video clearly hit a nerve.
The sibling favoritism theme is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
They finally reaped what they sowed

OP's best friend didn't do anything to embarrass them, they were fully capable of that themselves

OP's best friend deserves all the love he got in the comments section

OP's best friend is getting a lot of love for showing up when his family did not.
That kind of support is hard to miss when everything else falls apart.
Not only does OP have no obligation to take the video down, he can even monetize it and we are sure the internet will meme it in perpetuity

We like the scorched earth approach everyone is suggesting

OP, please take this wonderful wedding gift

People are not exactly being subtle about whose side they are on.
This reads like the sister who got her unruly dog banned, and the family feud that followed, in AITA For Banning My Sister's Dog From My Wedding.
The comments are basically a roast session at this point.
This fully showed whose OP's real family is

The sister could have at least had the decency to find a more reasonable excuse next time they fail OP

She didn't even have a much deeper reason for their parents to choose her over OP

Even the excuses are getting dragged now.
At this point, nobody is buying the family's version of events.
They shouldn't be privy to any important milestones in OP's future because they obviously don't care that much

Were they embarrassed? Hell, yeah! But it isn't OP's responsibility to save them from it.

This scenario is an exception to that rule and every other social decorum rule

The internet is fully in scorched-earth mode here.
We absolutely love this greatest hits compilation. Again, OP, you can make money off of their bad parenting.

If they really believe they did nothing wrong, they shouldn't be embarrassed at all but they obviously know they f*cked up

No more incognito bad parenting, be proud of your shortcomings!

That is one way to turn bad parenting into a public spectacle.
OP's family may not love the attention, but the comments definitely do.
This is an important information

She is a neurotypical adult who is terribly spoiled and can give Meryl Streep a run for her money

With an instinct like this it's no wonder OP thinks his wife is the love of his life

OP's wife and best friend are getting a lot of credit for being the real support system here.
That contrast is doing all the storytelling for them.
OP's parents can maybe try this excuse next time

OP has the option to go no contact with his family and keep the video online. How's that for having his wedding cake and eating it, too?

They really did hand OP a mess and then asked him to clean it up quietly.
He has a life with people who actually show up for him now, and that seems to matter more than anything his parents have to say.
The whole thing leaves one question hanging in the air, and it is not a flattering one for the parents.
Was OP supposed to just smile and take it?
They could have at least pretended that a more pressing issue came up to justify their absence. It's like OP's parents and sister grabbed the nearest, flimsiest excuse and ran with it.
OP has a good life ahead of him, surrounded by people who truly love him, like his wife, his best friend, and their new family. He also has a valid excuse to throw to his family's face when he misses an event, just say he's too sad because his dog is sick; having an actual dog is irrelevant.
This situation highlights the intricate and often tumultuous nature of family dynamics, particularly when it comes to pivotal moments like weddings. The decision of the parents to prioritize their daughter's emotional distress over their son's significant life event raises questions about loyalty and obligation within familial relationships. The parents' choice may stem from a desire to support their daughter during a difficult time, yet it inadvertently undermines their son's moment of joy. This reflects a broader pattern in family interactions where one member's needs can overshadow another's, leading to feelings of resentment and disappointment.
Open communication is essential in these scenarios. If the parents had openly discussed their feelings and the rationale behind their decision with both children, it might have fostered understanding rather than hurt. Ultimately, creating a nurturing environment where every member feels heard and valued is vital for maintaining strong family bonds.
The parents' decision to prioritize their daughter's distress over their son's wedding illustrates the complex interplay of family dynamics and emotional priorities. This scenario highlights how deeply ingrained familial obligations can sometimes overshadow significant life events. The article prompts readers to reflect on the importance of communication within families, emphasizing that addressing individual emotional needs can help navigate such fraught situations. The challenge remains in balancing these needs without neglecting the milestones that define our relationships.
Ultimately, fostering an environment of open dialogue could lead to healthier family interactions, allowing each member's feelings to be acknowledged while also honoring key life events.
