30 Cats And Kittens Who Found The Purr-fect Spot To Cozy Up And Doze Off Despite How Weird It Seems To Humans
Cats have a gift for finding the strangest possible place to fall asleep, and somehow making it look completely natural. A windowsill, a shoebox, a trash can lid, a shelf that seems far too narrow, none of it is off-limits once a cat decides it is nap time.
This roundup is all about cats and kittens who picked cozy spots that make perfect sense to them and almost none to humans. From cramped corners to oddly shaped containers, every photo shows just how committed cats are to their own version of comfort.
And once one cat finds the perfect weird little bed, the rest of them seem eager to raise the bar.

2. “Double fit, double sit!”

3. “If I fits, I sits”

4. Can't imagine how sitting on the edge of a table would be comfortable, but Cinder makes it look phenomenal.

You probably know by now that cats sleep a lot. In fact, the average cat sleeps roughly 15 hours per 24-hour period, and it's not unheard of or particularly bizarre for a cat to occasionally sleep as much as 20 hours in any given 24-hour period.
In contrast, the average human sleeps 8 hours per 24-hour period (I know, if you're anything like me, you're probably shocked because that sounds like a lot more sleep.) However, just like humans, how much sleep a cat needs or wants can vary significantly.
Cats are biologically programmed to sleep a lot during the day, so if your cat sleeps 15 or 16 hours a day, you're totally fine to assume that's the amount of sleep your cat needs.com:
"If you’re worried because she’s suddenly sleeping more than usual, or because she’s lethargic when she’s actually awake, that’s another thing. If something like this is bothering you, definitely don’t delay talking to your vet."
5. “Are you trying to tell me that I don’t fit?!"

6. Just compress yourself into the screen, why don't you?

7. “Bought a water gun to annoy my girlfriend with. Cat found a new favorite spot.”

8. “This is my favorite position, so what?”

9. “Who dares disturb my slumber?”

10. I suppose this is nothing to complain about.

Another astonishing thing about cats and sleep is that only 25% of a cat's sleep cycle is spent in deep sleep. Surprisingly, that's actually a little more than how much sleep is deep for a human, which is 16-23%.
The other 75% of the time your cat spends sleeping is "light snoozing." Our precious cats are getting all the sleep they need, but it's also important, from their perspective, to be alert and ready for action.com:
"To tell if your cat is merely snoozing, look to see if their eyes are open just a bit, and also watch their ears. If their ears are twitching and rotating toward noises, your kitty could spring to life at any moment."
Additionally, cats can snore and dream just like humans can! So far, for all of our differences in sleep habits, us humans seem to have a decent amount of things in common with our cat companions.
Even if the evidence stacks up that cats are total weirdos about their sleeping habits, there's enough understanding among family (and cats are indeed family) for us to empathize with their, well, weirdness. Weird like these absurd and silly photos display!
11. “I can’t leave an instrument case open for any amount of time without her doing this. My mandolin case happens to be just the right size for her.”

12. “A perfect cat performs a perfect circle…”

13. "Packing Essentials"

14. “She’s an oddball of fluff!”

15. "My boyfriend put popcorn in the microwave, readied a bowl on the counter, and came back to this."

Still, surely part of you right meow is wondering how and why cats contort their bodies into some of the utterly bizarre positions we see them sleeping in, right? You're not alone; these questions may as well fall into the category of "tale as old as time," or maybe it's more appropriate in this discussion to say tail instead of tale.
PetPlace.com says:
"Cats can be comfortable sleeping just about anywhere. Don’t worry about your cat’s strange sleeping positions. If she’s sleeping through it, then she’s obviously not uncomfortable."
Cat bodies "are much more adapted to sleeping at awkward angles. They can contort their bodies in ways humans can’t. A position that would be painful for a human, like putting a leg up over your head, is barely a mild stretch for a flexible feline. They’re not in any pain when they fall asleep with their limber limbs pointing in all directions or their neck craned at an awkward angle. This makes it easy for cats to sleep in crazy positions."
These cats’ nap positions are as unbelievable as the contortionists who defied all rules.

17. “She claimed this box, and it’s the perfect fit for her.”

18. “Ted found a purr-fect hiding spot!”

19. This cat enters another dimension while sleeping on those bags.

21. When your cat claims a box, your best bet is not to interfere in any negative way.

22. A little in, a little out. It goes a long way.

23. “She has 4 beds but will ditch all of them for this trash can lid.”
