Dog Astonished After Finally Being Adopted Following 2,381 Days In The Shelter
Introducing Higgins, a resilient German Shepherd who has spent almost his entire life at the Humane Society of Preble County. This senior dog has faced the sad reality of being overlooked time and time again, with no families choosing to adopt him.
However, despite these circumstances, the shelter staff never lost hope for Higgins, and most importantly, Higgins himself never stopped dreaming of finding a forever home. Higgins's journey started when he was just a puppy.
He was brought to the shelter at a young age and was immediately adopted. Everyone believed that Higgins had found his happily-ever-after, but life had other plans.
Unfortunately, his first home turned out to be less than ideal. As a result of these adverse living conditions, Higgins found himself back at the shelter. In a conversation with reporters, Renner from the Humane Society of Preble County recalled, “We heard he was nothing more than a dog chained up to a dog house.” He further revealed, “After about a year, someone came in with a stray dog – and it was him.”
This turn of events marked the beginning of Higgins's extended stay at the Humane Society of Preble County. Despite his circumstances, the spirit of this elderly German Shepherd remained unbroken.
His eyes continued to hold the glimmer of hope for a permanent, loving home. Inspired by his unwavering optimism, the shelter staff mirrored his determination, refusing to give up on him. Read his story:

However, his new home was less than ideal. Renner from the Humane Society of Preble County recalled, “We heard he was nothing more than a dog chained up to a dog house.” He further revealed, “After about a year, someone came in with a stray dog – and it was him.”

Higgins had always clung to the hope that one day, the right person would walk through the shelter doors and give him a loving home. However, this day seemed never to arrive.
A misunderstanding added to his plight, with many people mistakenly believing that Higgins was unwell due to his lengthy stay at the shelter.
According to Renner, “When he was in his kennel, his face always had such a worried look on it that he was a little intimidating.” This led to prospective adopters often overlooking him, with Renner adding, “People just walked right by him.”

But his luck changed. He finally found his forever home

After a staggering 2,381 days of waiting in the shelter, Higgins finally found his forever home. The beacon of hope arrived in the form of Brendon Reed, a 22-year-old who was completely smitten by Higgins upon seeing his picture online and reading about his backstory.
At that very moment, Reed felt a strong connection and knew that Higgins was the dog he wanted to welcome into his life. Reed said, “He was just a beautiful dog.” He continued, “He just seemed so adorable… I’m not sure how he didn’t get adopted.”

Higgins now enjoys the simple comforts of life

Renner was pleasantly surprised when Reed walked into the shelter and declared, “I’ve come to take Higgins home.” After a long wait of six and a half years, Higgins finally found a loving parent in Reed, someone who makes him feel cherished and secure every day.
Higgins now enjoys the simple comforts of life, like sprawling on a soft couch, watching television, and frolicking in his own backyard, where he can roll around in the grass to his heart's content. We are absolutely thrilled to acknowledge that Higgins will make a fantastic companion in Reed's life.
