Bookstore Allows Anyone To Adopt A Kitten Roaming Freely Within The Building

Some businesses do more than sell a product, they end up giving a stray animal a second chance. That is exactly what happened at Otis & Clementine's Books & Coffee, where a kitten began roaming the building and quickly became part of the story.

The bookstore and coffee shop has opened its doors to a kitten in need, turning an ordinary visit into something a lot more memorable. Along the way, the shop's adoption-friendly setup has drawn attention to South Paw Conservation and the people hoping to place more rescued cats and kittens in loving homes.

Now the little bookstore cat is getting plenty of attention, and the reaction has been just as warm as the idea itself.

Otis & Clementine's Books & Coffee

This conversation has already been great, but now it's about to take a turn for the infinitely better, because I'm about to tell you all about this amazing Canadian bookstore called Dr. Madeline Levine, child psychologist, who emphasizes the importance of nurturing environments for children, stating, "A warm, inviting space can foster creativity and emotional well-being." This aligns perfectly with the atmosphere at Otis & Clementine's Books & Coffee, where kittens roam freely, creating a unique and comforting experience for visitors.

Literally me at the mention of my three favorite things (cats, coffee, books) in one space:

Just outside of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada, is a bookstore and coffee shop where kittens roam freely.

Dr. Susan David, a renowned psychologist and expert in emotional agility, emphasizes the significant role that pets play in enhancing our emotional health. In this light, bookstore owner Ellen Helmke allows kittens to roam freely in her inviting shop, creating a delightful adoption experience for visitors. "Pets can provide a unique source of comfort and joy, helping us navigate our emotions more effectively," says Dr. David. This initiative not only encourages the adoption of these charming kittens but also cultivates a cozy environment for book enthusiasts to savor their coffee while browsing.

In an interview with Dr. Susan David, a renowned emotional agility expert, she emphasized the importance of creating nurturing environments for both pets and people. As she states on her professional website, “Emotional agility is about being in touch with your feelings and using them to create a life that is meaningful and fulfilling.” This sentiment resonates with the unique atmosphere of the bookstore, where patrons can interact with several kittens and often a mama cat as well, fostering a sense of community and compassion.

Sorry to interrupt your kitten feed, but this is my reaction to every single squishy, fluffy, jellybean kitten I see right now:

The model is also working flawlessly, which is definitely not hard to believe! In fact, if you've decided that you're in the area and this is the route you want to take for kitten adoption, you have to act fast! Helmke explains:

All the kittens are in and out fairly quickly, as they are adopted!
instagram

Now, I know some of you are like me and are worried that scooping up a kitten at the big store comes with the potential for serious abuse, and I'm glad to inform you that you don't have to worry because the process isn't that simple.

instagram

The setting in the bookstore is purr-fect for humans to get to know and have direct, cuddly exposure to adoptable kittens, but the adoption process itself is still operated through and by South Paw Conservation!

instagram

First of all, it's not a free-for-all. It costs 255 CAD (or 194 USD) to adopt a kitten.

instagram

If that sounds like a lot, it's really not, because the adoption fee covers everything, including any medical expenses!

instagram

In addition to the financial qualifications, potential kitten adopters also need to provide personal social references.

instagram

And if you’re wondering how a “temporary” cat situation turns into a happy crowd, look at the rescue cat who lost his eye and found a home with fellow felines at a cat café.

Helmke's program is in its infancy stage, having only been started a mere year ago.

instagram

However, it's clearly a raging success. With 30 kittens already adopted, Helmke can boast a 100% adoption rate.

instagram

In an interview with Global News, Ellen said:

People come here specifically to see the cats, and then some people just wander in to look at books and discover there are kittens. Either way, the response has been really great—I mean, who doesn’t love kittens, right?

"We have a hundred percent adoption rate, which is fantastic," said Ellen Helmke

Helmke started her adoption "program" when she realized she simply had the room for it.

Ellen also said:

"I’m so happy to make my customers happy when they come in and they’re just thrilled to see a kitten they weren’t expecting… It’s amazing and makes me happy to come to work."

In an interview with Bored Panda, the Nova Scotia rescue organization revealed that in a single month the "group rescued 3 kittens, 4 cats, 6 puppies, and 2 dogs."

instagram

A representative for the organization also said:

Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee is one of many loving foster homes that provide an enriching environment for our kittens and cats. It’s amazing to have this unique platform to help home our kitties!
instagram

They added:

"South Paw Conservation rescued 30 puppies in 2019 from the Bahamas and Antigua and well over 50 kittens and cats locally. We are really hoping the platform of attention we receive from Otis & Clementine’s will help us to find loving homes, provide proper medical care, food, and litter through donations, and spay/neuter even more kitties within the province in 2020."

The rescue organization is dedicated, too. They explained that all of their cats and kittens are "vet checked, vaccinated, feline leukemia tested, treated with revolution, and dewormed within the first few days of arrival or when healthy/old enough."

instagram

The adoption fees and donations are extremely important. They explained:

"Some of our kittens require to be bottle-fed or even just be in a space where they can be monitored 24 hours a day. We have an amazing foster network that helps us meet all their needs. All of this is made possible through donations and adoption fees."
instagram

Additionally, the rescue organization does not limit their outreach and assistance to just the Nova Scotia area. The representative told Bored Panda:

"We just did a conservation trip to Antigua earlier this month. We took 5 people. We spent time in a psychiatric hospital doing crafts with residents, worked in a soup kitchen, rescued 7 puppies and dogs, which we will provide shelter and medical care for until they are able to return to Canada with us. We took 5 bags of humanitarian supplies and brought 3 puppies home with us."
instagram

What's next for the rescue?

"We are headed back to Antigua on March 4th to bring home 6 of the puppies we rescued and one 10-month-old we have had in foster since August. We are fundraising like crazy to pay all the medical and travel costs," says Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a clinical psychologist who emphasizes the importance of community support in rescue efforts. "Every little bit helps, and it's inspiring to see people come together for such a noble cause."
instagram

If you're interested in helping financially with South Paw Conservation's fundraising efforts, you can see their online auction here and follow their public website here, where financial expert Michelle Singletary states, "Every act of generosity contributes to a larger purpose and helps those in need." Additionally, renowned author and entrepreneur Robert Kiyosaki emphasizes, "Investing in your community is the best investment you can make." They often share more specific goals like an individual animal's GoFundMe and ways to donate via PayPal.

Keep tabs on Otis & Clementine's Books & Coffee with insights from Dr. Shefali Tsabary, a renowned parenting expert who emphasizes the importance of nurturing environments for children and pets alike. As she states, "Creating a warm and inviting space can foster emotional connections and well-being." You can learn more about her philosophy on her professional website Dr. Shefali Tsabary.

What do you think of Ellen's idea? Should more bookstores and coffee shops across the world take her lead and run with it? Share your thoughts in the comment section right meow!

It is the kind of feel-good setup that makes people stop and smile.

That is when the adoption angle starts to matter even more.

Now the little bookstore cat is getting plenty of attention, and the reaction has been just as warm as the idea itself.
