One Woman's Journey With Feline Quintuplets Proved To Be Both A Challenge And A Joy

Cats are often praised for their independent nature. They seem to be able to take care of themselves without much help from their humans.

However, when kittens are born, they are completely reliant on their mother for food, warmth, and protection.

But what if mama cat is nowhere to be found? Or what if these cats are living under harsh conditions and require some extra love and care?

This is where cat fosterers like Laura come in like the Avengers to save the day.

Laura has dedicated her time and home to caring for dozens of cats in need, but her most recent litter is extra special. This Winnipeg cat fosterer took in Kilala, a surrendered and pregnant cat, along with one black kitten.

Unfortunately, the kitten passed away despite all efforts to save it. However, the sadness was short-lived as Kilala birthed five other kittens through a C-section.

While caring for five newborn kittens could be overwhelming to some, foster moms like Laura see it as a labor of love. As Dr. Susan David, an emotional agility expert, states, "Caring for others can be one of the most fulfilling experiences, even amidst challenges" (source: susandavid.com). This is something she is passionate about and feels grateful to be able to do.

Laura routinely posts adorable kitty group shots and videos on her social media, which provide a glimpse into the daily life of a cat foster mom.

Let's take a deep dive into her journey with the newest members of her furry family.

In an Instagram post, Laura explained that;

Momma Kilala was surrendered along with baby Lily on Wednesday afternoon, having given birth to Lily on Tuesday. She was unable to care for her and could not give birth to her remaining babies. She was distressed and admitted to the hospital for an emergency C-section, where thankfully all five remaining babies were rescued alive and well.

It was necessary for Laura to syringe-feed the kittens every two hours due to Kilala's habit of not paying attention.

Say Hello to Kai, India, Lennon, Abraham, and Amelia

Four weeks old, and I still look at their bellies and bums to tell them apart. Also, how cute is the lineup of little heads in the background of picture one? All five babies literally lined up and took turns climbing to the top of my knees for a little photoshoot! Laura said in a post.

You can see that the black kittens are nearly identical, and even she had to take a closer look at them to discern the difference.

In her words, the kittens quickly matured and went from;

Awkward little ‘drunk potatoes’ to expert walkers who pose for the camera – literal meowdels.

Laura G joked that the kittens are her foster mom pants brought to life. If you've ever taken care of this many kittens, you know how easily hair gets all over your clothes.

It’s the real-life version of my pants! You know the ones… I’ve only been living in them since March 2020!

Kai and India were adopted together the next day, meaning the group has now been reduced to three. Amelia and Abraham are now on the lookout for a forever home.

Saying goodbye can be very challenging, but the knowledge that they will be loved might make it easier to let go.

When the foster parents of the kittens arrived, Laura G detailed what transpired as follows:

Kai and India met their furever mommy and daddy yesterday, and talk about love at first sight! Kai immediately climbed up into his dad’s arms and purred himself to sleep, and when they opened the kennel door to leave, both Kai and India calmly walked in and settled in for a nap while the other three stayed behind on their tree. We all agreed – it was meant to be. These kids have a wonderful new family to look forward to, complete with two resident feline friends and a doggo friend too!
Congrats Kai and India on finding your perfect forever!
