Loveable House Cat Inexplicably Zooms Around The House After Doing Its Business
Cats are so oddly endearing; they can be clingy one moment and the epitome of an antisocial teenager the next. This doesn't take away from their charm, though; if anything, it makes us love these stealthy demons even more.
Despite making us their personal butlers, cats haven't been domesticated nearly as long. Humans technically didn't even domesticate them; cats lived alongside us until they domesticated themselves.
Around 8,000 years ago, wildcats started getting close to humans in the Middle East because it was beneficial to them. Where humans are, that's where the rats go.
Since rodents like crops and other agricultural products cultivated by humans, cats would naturally follow where the ancient people settled. Another ancient lineage of cats contributed to the modern cats we know today.
These were African wildcats that were brought onto ships to the Mediterranean. They were along for the journey because they were effective pest control against rats and mice.
Humans had no need to cage these wildcats; cats practically decided that people were kind of cool to live with, and since then, they have been wreaking beautiful chaos in our lives as the masters of our houses.
The study on how cats were domesticated was coauthored by the geneticist Eva-Maria Geigl. She said in an interview with National Geographic that cats weren't selectively bred and domesticated because "they were perfect as they were."
It has been thousands of years since cats decided that humans are cool, but some of their behaviors are still a novelty to us

Like this Redditor's cat, who acts like she's being chased by a hellhound after she's done pooping
It's not really a problem, says the owner, but more of a strange and funny repeated incident. Apparently, the cat zips through their home, pauses, and continues the one feline sprint after pooping.

The owner is not alone, as other cat owners shared anecdotes of their own troublemakers

This person's cat specifically runs only right after she's done with her business

This sounds like sound advice from an experienced cat owner

Anyone want to bet that this is what our cats are thinking about while they zoom?

This captures the behavior perfectly!

Other people had different ideas on what to call it

Poomies sound like a breed of pumas and Pomeranians

The pun!

Also an accurate description of the daily post-poop event

Don't you just love it when they seemingly fly and dive onto the bed with cat litter on their paws and everything?

A potential explanation arose from the Reddit comments section

Yelling near where your poop is doesn't sound like an effective escaping tactic. Maybe they're just trying to blame us for their mess, which we will gladly clean for them.

Someone echoed calling it poo-phoria as a potential explanation, but we need more information

"An ode to my bowels that recently vacated my colon," sings the cat

"Yes, sweetie, we are so proud of you," says their human

Some cats do pre-poop zoomies instead of post-poop sprints

It's time to celebrate my once-again clean colon!

We are officially calling it poo-phoria, and there's an actual explanation for the behavior!

What we've learned so far: cats tricked us into thinking that we domesticated them when it's the other way around. They decided we're cool because their food lives in proximity to us, until one day, we find ourselves dedicating our whole salary to house and feed them.
How awesome is that? Cats own the internet, and by extension, us, and they know it; keep zooming around, kitties, and we will capture every moment and share it with all the cat lovers out there!
