Extremely Disheveled Dog in Dreadlocks Who Hates to Be Touched Just Got a Makeover and It's the Most Amazing Thing You Will See Today
Like humans, animals also easily show signs of distress and trauma, especially those who have been wrongfully abandoned. Animals, particularly dogs in this case, often experience neglectful ownership and endure outright abuse. While it's truly unfortunate, it's a good thing that most of them end up being rescued in shelters, because who knows what could happen if they were to spend the rest of their lives under the care of such abusive humans?
Sometimes, a dog's trauma isn't easily or physically visible; it may only manifest through their behavior, such as avoidance, freezing, defecating, or urinating in the presence of the trigger, or becoming much more aggressive. In the worst cases, a dog's appearance at first glance will tell you all you need to know about what they have gone through, and it's a truly disheartening sight to see.
You would know that a poor dog has been through tough times if they are visibly shaking and refusing any kind of physical contact from anyone who wishes to help. They are far too traumatized to allow themselves to mingle with humans again, and while it may not be easy, patience and persistence will truly go a long way in their recovery.
That's definitely the case with this particular dog that you're about to see...
Meet Barny.
The people who found Barny were shocked by his appearance the first time they spotted him near Barking Mad Dog Rescue (BMDR).
“We found Barny near our shelter in a small village called Nisipari in Romania,” Hayley, the adoption team leader at BMDR, told The Dodo.
“The shelter is quite remote, so we believe someone left him there for us to find. We don’t know where he came from or how he ended up in such a terrible condition.”

Barny had such a matted appearance that his fur looked like it was in dreadlocks. It was also hard to tell that he was even a dog because of how drastically disheveled he was.
The poor boy had clearly been through so much abuse and mistreatment. It's fortunate that his new friends at the shelter made it their mission to give him another chance at life and help him become more comfortable in his own skin again.
“He was VERY scared and didn’t want to be touched or handled,” Hayley said.

Since Barny was extremely nervous and his fur was all over the place due to matting, the vet decided that it would be more convenient for everyone if they sedated Barny while shaving his dreadfully unkempt fur.
Once they finally cleaned him of his dreadlocks, it would be easier for them to address any other injuries, clean his teeth, and ensure that his well-being was taken care of. As you can guess, it took a lot of people and several hours to get him up and going, and it also required a significant amount of work to groom him back to a healthier state.
When they were finished, Barny looked completely brand new; his poor appearance was gone.

Barny definitely felt a lot better, and it showed in the way he finally tolerated human contact. The dog still has a long way to go for his complete recovery, but the people at the shelter are more than happy and willing to help him shake off the trauma and abuse he experienced.

It has been over six months since Barny's transformation, and he definitely seems much more alive and different from the dog that entered the shelter. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done, but he has come so far already!
The people at the shelter can vouch for his progress, as they say they love watching him slowly come out of his comfort zone little by little each day.
“Barny is a real cheeky character and has settled in really well at the shelter,” Hayley said. “He’s learning to trust and gets better every day.”

It's truly heartbreaking that there are many dogs out there who have experienced the same struggles as Barny but have yet to find kind-hearted people to rescue them. It's also disheartening that some individuals can stomach abusing these poor animals who only want the best in the world.
We're hopeful that Barny meets a family that will take him in and care for him in the way he deserves. Comment with your thoughts, or share this article with all your family and friends to see!
