Duncan, A Shelter Dog With Body Scars Finds A Forever Home, Only To Die Shortly After
Duncan looked like a dog who had already survived too much, with scars across his face and body and a quiet way of asking for kindness. Then, in one small shelter moment, he found it.
Sarah Rosenberg of Atlanta’s LifeLine Animal Project met Duncan after he was brought in from a porch following Hurricane Irma. He was battered, underweight, and covered in old wounds, but he still leaned into her as if he knew exactly what he needed.
That first embrace led to a brief stretch of happiness, and then a heartbreaking ending that made his story even harder to forget.

Sarah was deeply moved, and it was telepathic because Duncan seemed to feel the same way. Duncan tucked his battered head onto Sarah's shoulder as soon as his kennel door opened, so he could be cradled like a baby.

Sarah held him for a long time, but Duncan held her even tighter. She could tell that Duncan expected nothing but accepted everything with grace and incredible sweetness.
That pleasure seems to last forever. Duncan enjoys being outside in the sun, and he clearly loves the children he has met.
“I opened his kennel, and he melted into my arms”

When dogs come into the shelter after being abused or neglected, they may not survive due to injuries, starvation, or heartworms. Those who work at the shelter understand how to show an abused dog what it's like to be safe and loved, and it's extremely rewarding and makes it all worthwhile.
It’s a lot like the blind dog’s first surgery, then his first time seeing his loving family.

Duncan was up for adoption, and his rescuers were confident that he would make one very lucky family very happy. Duncan was fortunate to be adopted by a loving family.
Rosenberg found herself deeply moved. Duncan seemed to feel it, too

Unfortunately, he died less than a week later from infections caused by the wounds he'd been discovered with. Duncan died knowing he was loved, both by the LifeLine Animal Project staff and by his family, who had far too little time with him.

This life isn’t fair, even for dogs and other pets. However, Duncan, who went through a lot and even sustained lifetime scars while roaming homeless in the streets, managed to get a shelter home and an adoptive family that loved and catered for him beyond measure.
Sadly, the cold hands of death had to take him away from those who loved him so early. We believe this touching story will convince you to adopt a shelter dog today.
