Thousands, if not millions, of dogs are abandoned mercilessly and left to survive in the streets. This type of living situation can cause a lot of harm to the fragile animal.

This was the state one street dog was found in. Animal Aid Unlimited (AAU), a rescue organization from India, received a distress call from a concerned citizen about a dog in need of immediate help.
Without hesitation, the volunteers located the dog and found him, chest-deep in a sewer drain. As they got closer, it became apparent how badly this street dog needed help.
The helpless pup had a deep, gaping, and maggot-infested wound on his backside. When the volunteers got close to him, the dog didn't move at all which allowed the rescuers to save him.
They quickly got him out of the ditch he was in and wrapped him in a warm towel. Having seen his disturbing wound, the volunteers knew they had a limited amount of time to get the pup treated.
The AAU headquarters is not only a shelter for animals, it is also the first animal hospital in that region. The rescued dog was checked by veterinarians and they administered first aid.
They checked for other wounds aside from the one on the dog's backside. The doctors found another wound around the animal's jaw and moved quickly to clean the wounds.

Finally, he's out of the filthy water and the danger of further infection

The medical staff moved fast to assess the situation
The dog just looks so weak. He doesn't even have enough energy to whimper from pain.
The doctors from AAU administered medicated powder on the dog's open wound to help with the removal of maggots.
They had to cover the wounds with gauze and wait 24 hours until they can remove the maggots one by one.
As if the old dog's condition is not bad enough, he was also dehydrated. The vet had to give him an IV drip to treat him.
The dog stayed in the kennel for the duration of his recovery. AAU volunteers named him Shabaash!
His name means "wow" or "wonderful! After 2 weeks, the doctors once again checked on Shabaash's wounds and were pleasantly surprised that the old dog was healing rapidly.
They were proud of Shabaash for his willingness to and determination to heal.
The volunteers believe that his fast recovery is a gift. The sweet, old boy doesn't shy away from receiving pets and cuddles from the many volunteers rooting for him!
Shabaash is sure to have the best life, better than one he had when he lived on the streets.
Although Shabaash is old and in need of gentle care because of his arthritis, he will have a good life. He is surrounded by volunteers who will care for him and make sure nothing bad happens to him again.
Seeing the state Shabaash was in is heartbreaking. The pain and horror the dog endured are unimaginable. No dog or animal deserves to live that way.
It's a great thing that volunteers and organizations like AAU are there to help. We only wish good things for them and Shabaash!
