A Safari Ranger Spots A Rare Pink Baby Elephant In A South African Reserve
Pink elephants are supposed to be a joke, not a real sighting in the wild. But in South Africa’s MalaMala Game Reserve, a safari ranger came across a baby elephant with a rare champagne-pink coat, and the moment was impossible to miss.
The tiny calf was traveling with its herd in Kruger National Park when ranger Tim Jansen van Vuuren spotted it during a group drive. The elephant is believed to have leucism, a condition that affects pigmentation and gives him his unusual color, while also making him stand out in a way most wild animals never do.
That rare look made the calf unforgettable, but it may also make life harder as he grows. Read on.
The pink baby elephant frolics peacefully among his herd

The reserve is large enough that there is space for people to come close to them

Conditions like this aren't well documented in regular books, so it's an unreal sight to see

A lucky safari ranger, Tim Jansen van Vuuren, was the one who spotted the pink elephant while leading a group through the reserve. The ranger from Benoni, South Africa, was overjoyed to experience something out of the ordinary.
He recounted how the herd of elephants allowed the group to come near the baby pink elephant, giving them the opportunity to see him up close. However, there is a possibility that they may never encounter the elephant again, as they usually move across neighboring reserves, and the area is extremely large.
Tim had been visiting the 'bush' for most of his life and had only encountered something like this once. He has also been working in that environment for about six years, and even then, there wasn't an incident that came close to seeing the pink baby elephant.
That kind of sighting does not come around often.

Although there is concern that this baby elephant may have a hard time surviving

Not because of health, but because he would stand out to predators as they travel

There is a chance that he will grow into his regular color as he gets older

Usually, elephants suffering from leucism grow darker, and the pink remains behind their ears

And another one following the herd

Nature really has a way of surprising us. As a fundamental pillar of people's and animals' lives, it works in extraordinary ways.
The safari ranger Tim, along with the group he was leading, was fortunate to be present when the herd of elephants was traveling. It gave them a glimpse of a rarity, and they were welcomed to come near them.
The only hope for the pink elephant is that he won't suffer from the health consequences that come from his genetic mutation. His uniqueness is both a beauty and a threat, so it will be a tough road ahead for him.
