Meet One Of Nature's Smallest And Evolutionary Marvel, The Stunning Bee Hummingbird

In Cuba, there is a creature so small it feels like it should not be able to pull off anything dramatic, yet the bee hummingbird does it anyway. It flits like a living jewel, and its iridescent plumage makes it look less like a bird and more like a moving bit of stained glass.

Here’s the twist, though: the males can glow pink or crimson on their heads and throats, then sing and perform in midair to win a mate. But once eggs are laid, the mother keeps the father far away, because those bright colors that attract partners also scream “predator buffet.” Add in the fact that they do not migrate, they stay put in subtropical conditions, and their population is currently near threatened, and you’ve got a tiny love story with big consequences.

One bird, one season, and one risky choice, all happening over an inch-long clutch.

The whole “look at me” strategy kicks off when the male bee hummingbird starts singing and putting on aerial shows around the female.

Males have a striking pink or crimson glow from the top of their heads to their throats, and they sing and perform in the air all around to entice females. They lay eggs that are about an inch long and the size of a coffee bean.

Then the romance turns into a protective standoff, because the mother won’t let the father get close to the eggs with that vivid plumage drawing predators.

The mother bird won't let the father get close to the eggs, though, because of the vivid plumage, which predators will see. Like other hummingbirds, bee hummingbirds primarily eat nectar, but they occasionally eat insects and spiders as well.

And if you think “small” means harmless, the elf owl mistaken for a tennis ball is an avian predator with other plans.

Due to the brilliant plumage, the mother bird will not allow the father to approach the eggs

Even their dinner plans get complicated, since bee hummingbirds mostly hunt nectar but also grab insects and spiders when they need extra fuel.

They remain in their native Cuba, though, and are satisfied with subtropical conditions.

The bee hummingbird is currently listed as near threatened, which means its population is declining

They do not migrate from their native Cuba and are content with subtropical temperatures

And because they stay in native Cuba and do not migrate, the near threatened decline hits their entire world at once.

The bee hummingbird population is decreasing since it is currently classified as near extinction. Research together to save the ecosystem for these great species, as it would be a disgrace for this lovely bird to no longer exist.
