Tiny Pup From A Puppy Mill Crawls Towards His Rescuers For Help After His Front Legs Fail Him Due To Malnutrition
Breeding dogs is not illegal in the United States as long as the breeder is not found guilty of animal cruelty. This law varies from state to state, as some require a license to breed animals.
It is a competitive and lucrative business that attracts people who try their hand at it. The considerably lax laws surrounding the trade allow for some substandard practices in dog breeding.
Legitimate and dedicated breeders will, of course, ensure their methods are up to code in order to produce a top-notch litter. Puppies that come from a reputable breeder fetch a hefty sum, and you can be sure all the dog's papers are in order.
Unlicensed breeders, or what most call backyard breeders, are not always so strict with their methods. It is hard to prove that they are cruel to the animals under their care, but we can guess what goes on.
Animal rescue organizations have videos of puppy mill rescues to demonstrate how horrible the conditions can be. Some shady breeders only want maximum profit and, therefore, do not limit how many litters of pups a dog can produce in a year.
Adorable puppies are easier to sell, after all. Due to the number of dogs they are responsible for, it is inevitable that some dogs will not receive the attention and care they deserve.
The Humane Society of the United States is one of the many organizations saving these dogs from irresponsible and cruel puppy mills

One puppy that tugged at our heartstrings was Daniel

Daniel was just one of the 295 dogs rescued from an inhumane puppy mill

He was in a horrible state when the Humane Society intervened

The pup was lying on the dirt, unable to walk when they found him

He literally crawled to the rescuers to ask for their help. It was obvious he was a courageous dog who needed a lot of attention and love.

Within a few days at the rescue, after a few rounds of medically prescribed belly rubs, Daniel looked much happier

Soon enough, he began testing the strength of his front legs and tried to hop his way around

Slowly but surely, Daniel began to walk again!

His playful personality emerged as well

Two weeks later, he was an unbeatable champion of The Zoomies

His progress didn't stop there. Daniel the pup has transformed into a dapper gentleman.

He still enjoys belly rubs...

... and he has more than made up for the time he couldn't stand up, let alone walk

Daniel's story is unfortunately not a unique one

Had the Humane Society not received a tip through their line, who knows what would have happened to Daniel and the other dogs at the mill?

They were in a truly dire situation when they found them

So many dogs were left uncared for after they served their purpose. They only knew pain.

Even then, when he couldn't walk, Daniel was communicating how grateful he was for the second chance

The Humane Society of the United States hopes that Daniel's story, along with the other 294 dogs he was found with, can help combat the rampant puppy mill industry in the country

Daniel's story ended on a good note, and he is living his best life, but so many dogs and other animals are still in need of help

Stories like Daniel's are packaged as feel-good stories aimed at inspiring others. The bleak reality is that we will keep seeing stories like this one unless the root of the issue is addressed.
We got lucky this time that the Humane Society of America intervened early enough to give dogs like Daniel a second chance. Let's not wait for a time when we're too late.
