Raccoon Whose Head Gets Stuck In A Manhole Cover Is Helped By Rescuers
The Macomb County Animal Control, based in Michigan, received a not-so-typical call from a concerned citizen. This caller discovered a young raccoon with its head stuck in a sewer cover.
Three deputies responded and headed to the scene. They eventually found the raccoon in a painful position. According to Macomb County Animal Control Chief Jeff Randazzo, the poor creature was trying to get out of the grate, but its head got stuck.
During the rescue operation, the deputies had to remove the plate and transfer it to the ground. Fearing that cutting would generate heat on the cast iron, they decided against cutting the creature out.
The deputies concluded that the only method of freeing the young raccoon was to extract its head from the direction it had entered. So, they knocked on the door of a nearby residence to borrow some peanut oil.
It seemed that the raccoon knew it was being rescued when the deputies poured some oil on its neck. They gently twisted and pulled its head, and after 20 minutes, the little guy was finally freed from his predicament.

The team brought the raccoon for deworming and vaccination at the animal control facility to ensure that it was okay. They observed it for two days and finally released it at the location where it was initially found.

In the same week, another raccoon had to be rescued.
The animal control team had to save a different raccoon whose head got stuck in a soup can. Since people are at home more often, they have been noticing these animals in distress and calling for animal rescue.
According to Randazzo, people have been admiring the sights of wildlife in the neighborhood more than ever. Naturally, they are eager to help when they see an animal in trouble, and this is something that wild animals will surely appreciate.
