Donkey Rescued From Floodwater Smiled All The Way Home, Knowing He Had Escaped An Untimely Death
Mike the donkey had a rough morning in Ireland, and it could have ended very differently. After heavy weather damaged the gate at his stable in Killorglin, Co Kerry, he wandered into floodwater and ended up stranded in a field as a nearby river overflowed.
A woman’s post on the Animal Heaven Animal Rescue Facebook page helped set the rescue in motion, and a rowing club member joined the effort to reach him. With a cable and flotation aid in place, the team managed to pull him to safety, then dried him off, fed him warm mash, and let him recover at the shelter while his stable was repaired.
He made it home with a smile that says plenty.
Look at that contagious smile!

Shortly after, their vet team assessed him thoroughly and promptly started him on antibiotics to prevent pneumonia or any other form of infection that the cold floodwater might precipitate. They also discovered that he had a small amount of fluid in one of his lungs, but he gradually recovered.
A team of rescuers managed to get a rope and buoyancy aid around the donkey before pulling him to land

Though it was not a funny situation for an animal on four legs that doesn’t know how to swim to find itself in floodwater, this donkey walked home with a grateful smile on his face, knowing that he had escaped an untimely death.
He is now dried with towels, eating a hot mash, all cozy and warm

We are very happy about Mike’s rescue and his speedy recovery from the incident. His stable has been repaired, and he will have no concerns about flooding, even if it rains heavily again in the future.
