Stray Cat Shows Up On A Window Asking For Help, And It’s Heartbreaking
For more than a year, a stray cat named Carlton visited the same window every day. He was spotted by the young teenager living in the house, and she gave him food and treats every time.
Soon, Carlton started going into the house, showing that he felt secure there and that the people living there had earned his trust.
In May, the teen heard Carlton crying outside the house and saw a gash behind his ear. She knew that she had to do something about it. Unable to provide care by themselves, she and her sister contacted Little Wanderers NYC for help, and they did the right thing.

“It’s been the worst rescue season on record — we used to say it every year, but this time it’s really true,” Lisa Scroggins, cofounder of Little Wanderers, says. “We’ve never received so many rescue requests for kittens, mothers, and sick and injured animals.”

The family gave Carlton to Scroggins, who took him to the vet. There, they treated Carlton’s ear and discovered that he was FIV-positive. It’s a virus very common in stray cats, especially males, as they often get into fights over food and territory.
The FIV-positive diagnosis created another problem. Even though it won’t affect Carlton’s health (with proper treatment), it makes finding him a home more difficult. Scroggins explains that this is due to a common misconception that FIV-positive and FIV-negative felines cannot share a home.

But Carlton deserves a loving home after all he has endured while living on the streets.
“With every single person he’s met so far, he’ll just plop on your lap or headbutt you until you give him pets,” Carianne Loughlin says. “He just loves humans so much. It’s adorable.”
The ideal home for Carlton would be with humans who can provide him attention and care, and where he would be the only cat. Luckily, Carlton isn’t too picky when it comes to humans.
“He warms up immediately, he loves everyone, and he’s very snuggly,” Loughlin says. “He’s a big boy, too. He’s like a big cuddly mountain lion.”
