Stray Dog Seeks Refuge In Open Car Door, Finds Unexpected Shelter
A stray dog named River didn’t pick a quiet street corner or a hidden alley, she picked a family’s open car door like it was the last safe place on earth. And honestly, it kind of was. Bill sent Angela a picture of what he found, and that single photo turned into a whole new chapter for a dog who looked like she’d been surviving, not living.
When Bill, Angela, and their son welcomed River home, the house was warm, but River stayed glued to the car, acting like leaving it might mean going back to the streets. Then came the complicated part: River had to be carried inside carefully, introduced to three rescue dogs and a rescued cat, and treated for a rough health check that revealed tapeworms, heartworms, and painful wounds.

Bill sent a picture of the dog to his wife Angela.

River clung to the car door even after Bill and Angela got her inside, like the vehicle was the only thing that didn’t hurt her.
Upon arriving home, Angela and their son welcomed River. Despite the hospitable atmosphere, River seemed hesitant to leave the car, possibly viewing it as the only secure haven from her life on the streets.
Eventually, Bill carried River into the house, gradually introducing her to her new companions to prevent overwhelming her. With three rescue dogs and a rescued cat already part of the household, River was destined to assimilate seamlessly.
Visit to the vet.

After that muddy, tick-covered first night, River’s bath and her warm spot by the space heater became the start of her “okay, maybe I’m safe” era.
River's inaugural night at her new abode entailed a much-needed bath to rid her of the mud, blood, and ticks that besmirched her coat. Following a hearty meal, she spent the night beside a space heater on a makeshift bed in Bill and Angela's bedroom.
The subsequent morning witnessed River embarking on a voyage of exploration within her new surroundings, fueled by newfound inquisitiveness. Bill and Angela discerned her house-trained behavior, implying she might have once dwelled in a domestic setting.
River’s first night at home.

The next morning, River explored the house like she was testing reality, and Bill and Angela realized she already knew how to behave indoors.
Concerns regarding River's health prompted a visit to the veterinarian, where she was diagnosed with tapeworms, heartworms, and wounds on her neck and face. Despite her ailments, River exhibited increasing contentment each passing day, owing to the nurturing environment provided by her new family.
Introducing her to her new siblings.

Once River got through the vet news, she stopped acting like a visitor and started acting like family, romping in the yard and even bossing the cat for the bed.
With the passage of time and attentive care, River convalesced and acclimated to her new existence. Her confidence burgeoned with each passing day, and she appeared grateful for the second lease on life afforded by the benevolent man whose car she had sought refuge in.
River swiftly integrated into the family routine, frolicking with her canine counterparts and eventually winning over the initially aloof cat. Angela remarked, "She frolics in the yard and romps with Winston, obeys commands for treats alongside Ginger, and commandeers the bed alongside Butters."
River didn’t just find shelter in an open car door, she ended up taking over the whole household.
