Unique Baby Deer With Piebald Offered A Rare Glance At The Beauty Of Nature's Oddities
Cedar Springs, Michigan, has a small attraction with a big surprise, and visitors to Deer Tracks Junction quickly learned that its most memorable resident was not a ride or a game. It was Dragon, a baby deer with piebaldism, whose unusual coloring and sweet face made him stand out right away.
Dragon’s story was also a sad one, since he was rejected by his mother at birth and needed extra care at the farm. Even so, his short life gave people a rare look at one of nature’s strangest and most beautiful oddities.
His time at Deer Tracks Junction left a lasting impression.

Dragon has a condition called "Piebaldism."
A rare little deer like this was bound to get attention.
Piebaldism is a condition characterized by the absence of cells called melanocytes in certain areas of the skin and hair. Melanocytes produce the pigment melanin, which contributes to hair, eye, and skin color. The absence of melanocytes leads to patches of skin and hair that are lighter than normal.

"Out of an estimated 28 million whitetail deer in North America, you may find it even more fascinating to know that in the whitetail deer population, it is estimated that less than 2 percent will be born piebald."
Dragon's mother probably abandoned him because of the piebald condition, which leaves deer with limited vision and hearing, making them more vulnerable to predators.
Dragon was fortunate to be born at Deer Tracks Junction, where humans could take care of him in place of his mother, who abandoned him.
That made his story even more heartbreaking.
Sadly, Dragon passed away due to health complications. Deer Track Junction posted at the time:
"Well, sadly, this is an update that I never wanted to have to make. Despite all medical intervention available, we lost our little Dragon. It has been a tough time here, and he will be greatly missed by all."
For his short time on earth, it was truly special for both the folks at Deer Tracks Junction and anyone in the world who got a glimpse of this unique and adorable deer.
