Homeless Cat Shows Woman That She Wants To Be Let Inside Because She Wants To Bring Her Kittens In
What began as a neighborhood cat visit in New Orleans turned into a full-on feline family story, complete with a loyal house cat, a surprise pregnancy, and a very unexpected delivery location.
Artist Ida Floreak had already been feeding and watching over Salami when the cat started acting differently and showing up at her door with more urgency. Soon, it became obvious that Salami was not just looking for attention, she was looking for a safe place to bring her kittens into the world.
And once she got inside, the whole story took a turn Floreak never saw coming.

I would let him outside for a little while, and they would hang out in the backyard together. When he would come back in, she started to follow him.
Now they hang out all day, nap together, and groom each other. It’s very sweet.
As Salami continued to hang around with Bruce, Floreak wanted to gain the new cat's trust so she could catch her and take her to the vet for a checkup and vaccination. But before the operation to “win trust” could be called a success, Floreak noticed that Salami was pregnant.
Kittens Worth Gushing Over
One day, Salami started meowing insistently at my door at 5 a.m. I had started feeding her at this point, so she knew to come by, but she had never been so insistent and certainly never so early, the artist says.
Salami came inside and just meowed at me for a few hours, so I figured something was about to happen; she was so round at that point.

Ida let her in, and she started giving birth around 8 or 9 a.m. Floreak was quite surprised because she thought that the cat would disappear somewhere to have her babies, and she wouldn’t see her for a couple of weeks. She couldn’t believe that “somewhere” was her house.
Anyway, she did everything she could to help the pregnant cat, providing her with blankets and a safe, quiet environment. Soon, four miniature kittens came into this world.
Salami lives with me now, Floreak says. I was able to get her fixed and vaccinated, and she and Bruce hang out all day together.
She’s adjusted really well and is a very sweet and loving little cat. All of the kittens have gone to friends: one is in Mississippi, and the other three are all in my neighborhood.
I’m glad I still get to have a connection with them.
Floreak added that this situation was a lovely distraction during the early days of lockdown, which were frightening and confusing. I had an extra reason to stay inside the house, and something hopeful.
This story is also a great reminder about spaying or neutering your pets.
