Sweet Pit Bull Adopts Three Orphaned Baby Raccoons
Three tiny raccoons lost their mother far too early, and a Pit Bull named Ashlyn ended up becoming the calm presence they needed most.
When the orphaned babies wandered into a Canadian family’s backyard, they were hand-fed and welcomed in, then slowly introduced to Ashlyn in hopes that she would help care for them. What started as a cautious meeting turned into something much sweeter, as the dog began treating the raccoons like her own.
Now the little trio is growing up with a very unusual mom, and their story keeps getting more adorable.
Here's Ashlyn, the Pit Bull. She is very protective of her baby raccoons.
“My dog Ashlyn wasn’t really sure about the trio when they first arrived. However, now that a few days have passed, she’s adopted them as if they’re her own puppies.” - Katie, Ashlyn's owner.

The raccoons have grown to be playful, healthy, and active, thanks to this family who gave them a better chance to live and a happy, loving home. Luck was on their side when these babies sought help and stumbled upon this caring family.

Ashlyn shares a light moment with her babies.
Life without a mom would have been so hard for these baby raccoons. But look at them now: it seems Ashlyn is their biological mom!
They are so comfortable with each other; they are a true family.

Check out this video and see how Ashlyn shows herself being a hands-on mom to these poor raccoons.
She would never lose sight of them.
"This was the moment @ashlynthewonderdog started coming around to Eto."
"She was always protective of him, but she really started to embrace her motherly bond with him the weekend we spent at the pond. Of course, one day wasn't enough with this heat wave sweating the life out of us, so we went back for a few more days in the early mornings before the temperatures could really escalate."

That’s when Ashlyn started warming up to them.

"Eto obviously loved it."
"I wanted him to enjoy his playtime and also continue training him. Now that he was feeling good, we could start doing some hunting/scavenging practices. We did find a crayfish, but Eto wasn't off the milk yet, so he only played with it and dumped it."

Although they have been domesticated for quite some time, these baby raccoons are being taught how to deal with life in the wilderness because, very soon, when they are able and ready, they will eventually be returned to the wild.
Despite being sweet and tamed, the fact remains that these baby raccoons are wild animals.

"I've never had a kit look at me like this. He's smiling at me."

"With his teeth becoming more predominant, he wanted to use them. Think of this like a human baby when they start teething for the first time. They want to bite everything, haha. No different here. He was ready to prove himself, and this was the turning point where his confidence grew."

The little raccoons are clearly growing fast.
Indeed, these baby raccoons are learning to survive. Thanks to their Mama Dog, Ashlyn!
Sweet and inspiring.
The family has created an Instagram account to keep in touch with their rehabilitation. By far, the baby raccoons are making incredible progress.
Soon, they will be ready to face and thrive in the wild where they originally came from. We can be sure that this trio will miss their dog mom, who accepted them wholeheartedly and guided them in their everyday survival.
It’s a tiny family nobody expected, but it works beautifully.
