Officers Use Kayak In A Heroic Attempt To Rescue Dog From A Muddy Pond
Most dogs love to swim, but not all do. It only takes one unfortunate event to make a dog shy away from swimming for life.
For Akela, the Boxer Mastiff mix, swimming used to be a lot of fun until she got trapped in a muddy pond. Luckily, a person nearby saw Akela struggling in the water and immediately called for help.
The person reported that Akela managed to avoid getting hit by a car but got stuck in the pond as a result. The poor dog tried to swim to the shore, but it was hopeless.
The Washington Township Police Department in New Jersey was quick to respond in an attempt to save her.
The Big Rescue
When the officers arrived, they could see Akela trying to swim in the muddy pond. She had become tangled in the plants beneath her.
She was doing her best to tread water, but she couldn't make any progress. Her head would even go under the muck occasionally.
There was no time to waste for the officers, who had to act before Akela completely submerged. Officer John Kuligowski had the brilliant idea to borrow a kayak from a nearby resident.
He then climbed into the kayak and paddled out to Akela. He tried to pull her onto the boat, but Akela was a bit too heavy for that, so he decided to lead her to shore instead.

Chief Thomas Cicerelle and Officer Dallas Overko were also onshore to assist with the rescue. They came up with the idea to tie a ball to the end of a leash and threw it out to their colleague.
They used it to pull him to shore while he guided Akela to safety. In the end, they were able to free the dog from the muck.

Help Akela Find Her Way Back Home.
Akela looked great when she made it to the shore. She was unharmed and appeared happy to be out of the mucky water.
The pup was more than happy to pose for some photos with her rescuers. The only thing left for her was to find a way back home.
The police department announced that they are on the lookout for Akela's family. They are encouraging anyone with information about Akela's home to contact them, and hopefully, the poor little pup will soon be reunited with her family.
