Lost Dog Treks 150 Miles Across Alaska Sea Ice to Reunite with Family
Nanuq the one-year-old Australian shepherd didn’t just go missing, he vanished into the kind of landscape that makes “lost” feel permanent. Then, somehow, he turned up again, after weeks on Alaska sea ice, with his family staring at the same nightmare from Wales to Gambell.
It started in March on St. Lawrence Island, when Nanuq and another dog named Starlight disappeared during a visit to Savoogna. The only clue was a Facebook post from a family member, showing a dog that looked like Nanuq, and suddenly the whole situation became a race against distance, weather, and time.
And once Iworrigan spotted the post, she didn’t wait around, she booked a direct flight to get him back.
In March, Nanuq, a one-year-old Australian shepherd, went missing along with another dog named Starlight while visiting Savoogna on St. Lawrence Island with his owners.

Iworrigan discovered Nanuq's whereabouts through a family member's Facebook post showing a dog resembling him.

Iworrigan quickly organized her dog's travel from Wales to Gambell on a direct flight.

"Lost dog returns home after surviving weeks on Alaska sea ice"
That Facebook photo was the first real lead, and it hit Iworrigan like a lifeline the moment she recognized Nanuq’s look.
But with Nanuq out on the sea ice and Starlight still unaccounted for, every day without him felt like it could change everything.
Still, Iworrigan moved fast, organizing Nanuq’s travel from Wales to Gambell on a direct flight as if time could be out-run.
When “Lost dog returns home after surviving weeks on Alaska sea ice” became the headline, it wasn’t luck that did it, it was a family refusing to let the story end there.
Nanuq's adventure reveals just how tough and smart pets can be, proving they can handle even the harshest conditions. His story shines a light on the difficulties pet owners face in remote areas and the amazing help communities provide that we don't always see.
Most importantly, it reminds us of the strong bond we share with our pets—a bond so powerful it can overcome any obstacle and unite us, no matter how far apart we are, especially in the vast open spaces of Alaska.
Nanuq’s homecoming proves that sometimes the longest journey starts with one Facebook post and a whole lot of love.
