Dog With The Saddest Eyes Prompted A Woman To Help Her
Lauren Smith Greeno is a proud owner of three dogs, and she still wanted more. So, she hopped onto the internet to look for a fourth dog she could care for and foster until they found a new, permanent home. While searching for dogs online, she came across a picture that completely melted her heart.
It was a picture of a dog with the saddest eyes, and she knew right then that her search was over and that this was the one she wanted to foster.
“My heart broke when I saw her eyes,” Greeno shared with The Dodo. “They looked so haunted yet hopeful. I just felt instantly connected to her. I wanted to hold her.”
Ginnie with the Saddest Eyes
Meet Ginnie—a rescued dog with the saddest eyes. Ginnie and her siblings were rescued from their owners due to ill-treatment and improper care. Their owner kept them on short leashes, and that too outside. They were not given proper beds or toys to play with, nor were they allowed off leashes to play. Initially, they were taken to a shelter, and later on, they were moved to Charlie's Crusaders Pet Rescue. Once there, all of Ginnie’s siblings were adopted in a short time, except for Ginnie. Even after six months, no one adopted her.
“Nobody wanted her,” Greeno said. “After rescuing and falling in love with Ginnie, it's hard to comprehend what exactly turned potential adopters away. She is a gentle and affectionate girl who loves to cuddle and is a friend to everyone she meets. The rescue speculated that she wasn’t being considered because her darker coat made her harder to photograph.”

Ginnie on Her Way to Her New Home
Once Greeno saw the picture of Ginnie and learned about her ordeal, there was no stopping her. She immediately made all the arrangements to bring Ginnie home. Her plan was still to foster the fourth dog until she found a permanent home, but that changed completely once she met Ginnie.

“When we picked her up from the rescue, we had her in the back of the car so that she could have space to decompress,” Greeno shared. “We barely left the pickup site before she jumped into my lap and started smothering me with kisses. I cried. She was so trusting and so open to being loved.”
When Ginnie reached home, she was introduced to her new foster family and the three dogs with whom she would be sharing affection. Although Ginnie was a bit shy and reserved at first, it took her only 48 hours to feel at home and accepted in her new foster family. It was then that Greeno realized she might not be able to stick to her plan of fostering only.

“On the second day, I brought her up to my room and let her on the bed (she had never been on a bed before),” Greeno shared further. “I lay down on the bed and invited her to lay next to me. Without hesitation, she sauntered over and collapsed. As soon as her head hit my pillow, she let out the sincerest sigh of relief. She just lay there on the bed with her eyes wide, displaying what I can only describe as a mixture of amazement and profound contentment. I knew at that moment that she was home.”

So now Ginnie is all settled in with her new family. She is happy and content. She has adjusted well to her surroundings and fellow dogs and loves to play with them. All this has completely changed her life, and where there were once sad eyes, there are now only smiles.

“She fills our hearts with so much joy,” Greeno said. “Whenever our eyes meet hers, her tail immediately begins to wag. She is just the embodiment of pure love and goodness, and we are so grateful to have come across her picture.”
