Hairless Dog Shows Up At A Man's House Seeking Help On A Freezing Night
Abandoning a pet is almost as cruel as killing it. It is an inhumane act that must be stopped.
There are many instances where this happens, not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world. This is especially evident during the holiday season, with some pets that were purchased as Christmas presents being abandoned once the winter vacations are over.
Considering the pandemic, more people have been adopting or buying pets. Although this can be seen as a positive, the realization that things will return to normal is extremely stressful for both the pet owner and the pet.
When people have to work onsite and leave their homes without time to care for their pets, some pet owners choose to sell their pets, surrender them to shelters, or, in the worst cases, dump or abandon them on the streets.
When animals are abandoned, they are usually left in secluded areas or places where nobody will notice that someone has left their pet. Pets like cats and dogs are often discovered in dumpsters, on highways, and even chained to park benches.
Even though this is a piece of heartbreaking news, there is still hope for those abandoned pets, just like what happened to a rescued dog in New York and how she was able to recover from that traumatic experience.
When a Man Found the Dog in New York
A man in Earlton, New York, unlocked his front door one freezing January night to find an unexpected guest. He did not know where the dog had come from, but he was sure that the dog needed help, so he called the police, who took the dog to a shelter.
"It appeared that she had been dumped by the roadside and abandoned. It was a frigid night, and it was assumed she came to the door looking for food and warmth," stated a spokesperson from the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA on Facebook.

The Dog Had a Severe Skin Condition
When the staff saw the dog's helpless condition, they were heartbroken. They named her Penny, and Ron Perez, the president of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, said that it was sad to see a pet like her who had been abandoned in such poor condition.
"She was in bad shape. She had some open lacerations on her face and neck and was pretty much devoid of any hair," Perez added.
They discovered that Penny had a severe skin condition called "Demodex mange." It is caused by a parasitic mite called "Demodex canis" that eats the hair follicles and oil glands of dogs, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Although Penny survived, the skin condition had affected her overall health. She was left almost hairless, and her skin had infections and scabies.

Penny Was Recovering from the Skin Condition
"Within one week, she looked like a different dog. The vet was pretty impressed with her recovery," Perez happily revealed as Penny improved through the efforts, love, and care of the people in the shelter.

"She’s a real fighter and very resilient. Her stress levels are clearly much lower now because she’s interacting with people, has proper food, and is sleeping well," Perez said.

"We received a lot of applications to adopt her, but these two individuals are fantastic pet owners. They took it slowly and visited her a couple of times a week," said Perez as he revealed how the adoption process went for Penny.
"They brought their dogs in, and everyone got along fabulously. I’d like to think this will be the last home she’ll ever go to," Perez added.

On the other hand, Penny's previous owner was identified and charged with animal cruelty. Everyone was happy to know that justice had been served for Penny, but they were even happier to learn that she had found her forever home.

Animals need love and care from humans. Therefore, having a pet involves the great responsibility of keeping them well and secure, not just for personal entertainment to alleviate boredom.
This might just be one of the hundreds or even thousands of cases of pets being abandoned. But the most important thing is that people can work together to make the world a better place for animals and reduce instances of animal cruelty.
