Missing Dog Trapped In A Hole Is Rescued Thanks To Another Dog
Dogs are truly incredible: they make the best personal companions, the most precious family members, and have all sorts of important jobs. Some dogs are also absolute heroes, with fascinating stories to tell through their heroic actions.
If there's one thing dogs have become well known for, it's coming to the rescue. In February, Paweł Kałuziak took his dog Gucio for a walk.
That doesn't sound terribly extraordinary, and the duo were not strangers to casual walks. This particular day, they chose a route Gucio was familiar with, along a wooded trail near their home in Poland.
Because Paweł knew Gucio was well acquainted with the area, he was off-leash and doing his dog thing when something unexpected occurred...
Kałuziak says that Gucio never strays far and is always quick to return. However, on this day, Gucio disappeared and didn't return.
After just a few minutes, Kałuziak grew concerned that his dog had not returned quickly.
“He always comes back whenever I call him,” Kałuziak told The Dodo. “But when I called his name, Gucio did not come back.”
Throughout the entire afternoon, Kałuziak continued to search for his beloved Gucio, but with no luck.
Gucio was nowhere to be found. Kałuziak had no way of knowing where his dog was, but he searched daily and encouraged others in his community to keep their eyes out as well!
“I never lost hope that I would find Gucio,” Kałuziak said. “But it became such a long time without finding him.”
An entire month went by with no sign of Gucio when another man was in the same area on a walk with his dog Diego, a Jack Russell terrier.
Diego's attention was captured, and he began tugging on his leash incessantly, which ultimately led his owner to a deep hole hidden in the landscape!
Deep in the hole was Gucio, too weak to bark and suffering from emaciation. Quite literally, Diego had found Gucio just in time.
Diego's owner ran home immediately, grabbed a ladder, and carefully climbed into the hole to lift Gucio out to safety. Gucio was frail but alive.
His wife recognized Gucio despite his emaciated condition as the beloved dog Kałuziak had been searching for all month, and she contacted him right away!
“At first, I didn’t believe it,” Kałuziak said. “When I went to their house and saw Gucio, I started to shake. I fell to my knees and hugged him. It was the happiest day of my life.”
"I missed him very much," Kałuziak said. "For me, it was the same as having a family member missing."
Gucio was in the hole for 32 days, likely surviving on nothing more than melting snow.
Thankfully, Gucio was truly rescued in time, and every day spent at home with his beloved dog dad was a day of regaining strength and gaining weight.
Astonishingly, Gucio has not forgotten his hero, Diego!
Well into recovery, the two dogs had a little playdate to celebrate.
The hero Diego and the beloved Gucio played while Kałuziak reflected on the reality that this joyful moment was only possible because of Diego.
"They had fun together," Kałuziak said. "Just having Gucio back home makes me a happy man again, too."
Gucio is one lucky pup!
