Wild At Heart Rescue in Mississippi has a soft spot for animals that need a second chance, from foxes and geese to raccoons and possums.
So when Doug, the rescue’s president, brought in Gigi the horned owl with a serious head injury, the team knew she would need careful hands and a lot of patience. What they did not expect was how quickly she would warm up to him.
Then came the photos that made everyone stop and smile, because Gigi’s reaction to Doug is as sweet as it gets.

When Gigi was rescued by Doug, she had a terrible head injury.
It's unknown how Gigi was injured, but it is assumed that she was hit by a car.
Doug is very involved in the rescue process and likes to be hands-on—especially when it comes to birds of prey.
He has a unique way with birds, and it's clear by the way they respond to him.
That bond shows up in the sweetest way possible.
This is similar to the rescued baby gorilla who instantly settles into its caretaker’s embrace.
When Doug checked in on Gigi, she instantly threw both of her wings around him and gave him an owl hug!

Doug has an incredible calming effect on the birds—especially birds of prey.
It's a special gift that sets Doug apart from all the other rescuers.
"I actually don't think anybody in this world has a relationship with birds of prey like he does," said a spokesperson for Wild At Heart.
As soon as Gigi is well enough, she will be released back into the wild where she belongs. We hope she has the best life ever (and keeps away from cars)!
