Senior Dog Who Has Spent 9 Years Fending For Herself In A Junkyard Is Finally Rescued
When dogs reach the age of seven, they are already considered senior dogs and require more constant care and love as they age and approach the end of their lifeline. Older dogs often suffer from deteriorating eyesight and hearing, and they rarely have the energy to play like they used to.
These older dogs are also much more prone to experiencing stress, but they cannot handle it well, especially when they have nothing or no one to rely on. They exhibit more visible separation anxiety, and strange, unfamiliar noises can agitate them more than usual.
This is why it is crucial for dogs to have a family that is guaranteed to care for and love them unconditionally, especially as they reach old age and are no longer the energetic puppies they once were. Their joints become more sensitive, they get cold easily, and they tend to become anxious about anything in their vicinity.
That being said, it is truly cruel to know that some dogs, especially the older ones, are left alone to fend for themselves—abandoned by their previous owners who lacked the heart to ensure they would be cared for, even in a shelter. A similar situation has occurred with this particular dog...
Meet Pheenie.
Pheenie (real name: Josephine) has been rescued by Hope For Paws after a woman named Persephone Harrington reported that there was a homeless canine already in its senior years, living in a delivery container in a junkyard.

Rescuers have soon arrived and looked for the dog living in the container, surrounded by trash.

Locals reported that the dog had been abandoned nine years ago when its owner left her behind after being deported. Since then, she has been fending for herself in the junkyard and on the streets—confused about where her owner had gone.
While living on the streets, Pheenie was also hit by a truck at some point, and because no one was caring for her, she received no medical attention. The accident caused her eye to droop.

People in the area have helped feed her, although not regularly. But the dog knows she deserves better than that, given her age.
Pheenie has been wishing for a loving home that could take her in, as she is already of old age. The rescuers managed to save Pheenie without giving her any reason to be in distress.
Once they got close to the dog, they noticed the signs of aging and discovered that almost all of her teeth were already rotting and broken.

Pheenie was then transported to CARES, where she received proper medical care and basic hygiene. The vets discovered that she had an infection in her spinal cord, as well as a UTI and dental disease.
She also has some tumors in her mammary glands, which is quite common for unspayed dogs. The dog had a good slumber after taking a bath—and it seemed like her first good sleep in the past nine years.

The L.A. Animal Rescue has stepped up to foster Pheenie and provide her with a life full of the relaxation she deserves. She is now enjoying her days by going out for walks, playing outside, enjoying the snow, and overall just having a good time.
