Abandoned Pitbull Dog Feels Completely At Home With The Family That Rescued Him
According to BarkPost: "Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pitbulls. This means that nearly half a million Pitbull-type dogs are killed in shelters annually."
Yet for Pitbull dog lovers everywhere, this dog breed, which has an unfair reputation, is the standard to which all dogs should be held. Pitbulls are loving and forgiving, and the thought that they are so easily cast aside is honestly heartbreaking.
While the statistics regarding the euthanization of Pitbulls are staggering, there are also plenty of success stories worth celebrating, including this once-stray dog now living his best life! In fact, the family was such a perfect fit that he went straight from the streets to the human's car, where he was already snoring, content with his rescued life.
Jayme Harley was sound asleep when a text awoke her; it was from Aaron Peters, her boyfriend.
Peters sent Jayme a photo of a sad-looking stray dog at a gas station, no less, and said: “Go get him!”

Peters spotted the pup while driving his early morning route for FedEx.
By chance, Jayme had expressed to Aaron that she wanted a second dog, but he had not been quite as enthusiastic. The text message was quite the surprise!

Peters couldn't help but fall for the dog's bright blue eyes.
In an interview with The Dodo, Jayme reflected on how exciting it was that Aaron had come around to the idea of another dog so spontaneously:
“When it registered with me that it wasn’t a dream, I knew that it was serious, that he really wanted me to go get him!”

Aaron told The Dodo:
“He looked like he needed a family. I figured we could give him somewhere good to live.”

Jayme took the text seriously and rushed immediately to the gas station in Kinta, Oklahoma, where the dog had been abandoned.
Once there, Jayme gave the dog some water and looked for clues to determine if he was truly abandoned or just lost when someone pulled up and told her the heartbreaking truth:
“A girl pulled up and told me that she’d seen him jump out of a car. And no one would take him in because he was a Pitbull. That broke my heart because it should not matter what breed he is. All he wanted was somebody to love him.”

Jayme brought the dog into the car, and he promptly dozed off, snoring with happiness. Jayme said:
“It made me feel like that was the perfect moment. I felt like he knew that he was going to have a place to sleep that night. He was going to have food. And he finally had the help that he needed.”

Since then, the dog has been very well taken care of.
Jayme took the dog straight from the gas station to her veterinarian, where she confirmed he was not microchipped and, thankfully, that he was in really good shape aside from some mange. She named him Rufus and took him home, hoping the sweet dog would get along with her cat and her other dog.
Thankfully, the two dogs totally hit it off!
“They just started loving on each other, and they have since been best friends. They sleep together. They do everything together.”

Speaking of Rufus, Peters said, "he's a good dog."
Rufus took no time to bond with the cat, the kids, or the boyfriend, in addition to becoming best doggy pals with their first dog.
Today, both Jayme and Aaron believe that Rufus was meant for them:
“Bringing him in has added warmth to our home. He has added so much more laughter. He was the final piece to our family that we needed. He was the final piece we didn’t even know we needed.”
