Incredible State Trooper Rescues Bald Eagle in a Heroic Act on a Busy Highway
A bald eagle stranded on the shoulder of a busy highway is the kind of scene that can stop traffic in more ways than one. In Orange County, New York, a passing motorist spotted the injured bird on Route 17 in Blooming Grove and quickly called for help.
That call brought New York State Trooper Bryan Whalen to the scene, where he had to act fast to protect the eagle and keep the rescue from turning into something worse. With the bird hurt and the highway still active, the situation needed a careful response from everyone involved.
What happened next turned a roadside emergency into a memorable rescue, and the photos made the story even better.
The official New York State Police Facebook account posted this photo of the majestic eagle on their page with a caption describing how it all unfolded.
Trooper Whalen had to think quickly upon arriving at the scene, as he noticed the injured bird required immediate attention. Fortunately, the trooper was resourceful and had the brilliant idea to use his Division-issued jacket and a K9 trooper's bite sleeve to corral the injured bald eagle.
After tending to the wound and stabilizing the eagle, he proceeded to place the bird into a kennel provided by the Warwick Valley Animal Rescue. Once he ensured the bird was safe and comfortable in the kennel, he transferred the eagle to Officer Nicole Duchene from the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The officer ensured that the majestic bird returned to its former glory after making a full recovery at the New Paltz rehabilitation facility, where it received the care it deserved.
It was the kind of quick roadside response that can make all the difference.
