Family Gives Dog All The Attention He Deserves To Celebrate His 14th Birthday
The Christopher family turned a heartbreaking loss into a new tradition when they rescued a tiny pup named Dakota from Alabama and brought him home to Florida. From the start, he was treated like one of their own, and he quickly settled into a life full of road trips, beach days, and family milestones.
Over the years, Dakota lived in Florida, Costa Rica, and Tennessee, always happiest when he was near the water. His birthday celebrations became a yearly highlight, especially because the beach was his favorite place to be.
This year, though, his 14th birthday called for something a little different, and the family made sure everyone noticed.
“From a tiny baby, Dakota was an ‘old soul,’” Terri Christopher, Dakota’s mom, told The Dodo. “It's almost like he knew what we had been through, and really, it was he who rescued us! He has always had a laid-back personality and never even acted like a puppy.”

The Christopher family made sure Dakota's birthdays were always a big deal, especially when a beach day was still on the table.

As Dakota got older, he eventually didn't have enough energy to fully enjoy the beach anymore. However, his family still wanted to make his birthday special to show him how much he means to them.
It also reminds us of a 17-year-old dog hanging on just long enough to meet his human sister.

For Dakota’s 14th birthday this year, the Christopher family found the perfect way to showcase to the whole world how much they love him by inviting everyone to join the celebration. They hung up a sign that says “Honk for my 14th birthday” on the passenger’s side of their car, where Dakota was sitting and smiling the whole time.
They made sure to give him all the attention he deserves by driving around with Dakota, and he loved every second of it.

Last year at 13 was the first time we did the ‘honk for my birthday’ sign and car ride. He got such an amazing reaction and really seemed to enjoy all the attention. With his physical health declining over the last year, we were so fortunate to reach year 14, so of course, we had to do it again. Another wonderful trip around the sun. We had some serious celebrating to do!
