Photographer Isa Leshko turned a personal fear of aging into a striking visual project about resilience, dignity, and second chances. After her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, she began looking at old age in a new way, and that shift led her to farm sanctuaries across the U.S.

There, she photographed rescued animals who had survived abuse, neglect, and hard lives, then lived long enough to grow old. The result is Allowed to Grow Old, a black-and-white series that gives each animal a quiet, powerful presence.

Some of the animals have been through far more than their calm faces suggest.
