After Losing His Sight in a 2023 Crash, Jim McDermott Found New Freedom With Keanu, His Yellow Lab Guide Dog

Jim McDermott was coming home from work when a 2023 car accident changed nearly everything about his life. Years later, a yellow Labrador named Keanu would become the partner who helped him step back into the world on his own terms.

McDermott’s story turns on a simple, powerful change: after losing his sight, he wanted to be able to walk out his own front door alone again. In the clip below, the dog now helping make that possible is Keanu, a yellow Lab guide dog who has become both working partner and family companion.

That outcome was far from obvious when McDermott’s life first shifted. Before the crash, he said he had what felt like a steady, ordinary life. He was married, raising two daughters, working full time, and involved in church and ministry outreach. Then, on a drive home from work in June 2023, he was in a serious car accident that left him with a significant traumatic brain injury.

A long recovery, and a different kind of loss

The physical recovery that followed was extensive. McDermott underwent frontal lobe surgery and sinus surgery to repair a cerebrospinal fluid leak. He said he remained in a coma for nearly a month and a half.

As he began to wake, doctors discovered major damage to the optic nerves in both eyes. McDermott said his vision first became blurry, then worsened until he had full blindness with no light perception by the time he returned home from the hospital.

He described waking from the coma as a moment that felt spiritually significant, saying he felt regenerated from the Lord. His overall recovery moved faster than expected, and he was able to return home. But blindness brought an entirely new set of adjustments, especially around mobility and independence.

A mobility specialist named Carol, who was connected with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, suggested early on that he consider getting a guide dog. McDermott did not take that path right away. He said he felt overwhelmed by everything happening in his life and moved forward using a cane instead.

The dog who arrived at the right moment

The idea stayed with him. About two years later, McDermott remembered Carol’s advice, and she helped him begin the process with Guiding Eyes for the Blind. He had reached a point where he wanted more freedom and less reliance on family members or a human guide. For him, a guide dog felt like the best option.

That search led him to Keanu. The yellow Lab was placed with the McDermott family on July 7, 2026. McDermott said the bond was immediate. From the first day they met, he felt they connected, and he came away believing the dog cared for him in the same way he already cared for Keanu.

There is practical work behind that bond. McDermott said training together has been challenging. But the dog quickly became part of the household, not only as a guide but as a presence woven into the family’s daily rhythm.

Each morning, Keanu sleeps on the floor beside McDermott and wakes him by finding his face with his nose and giving him kisses. McDermott sees it as the dog checking on him and confirming that he is there. Once the day begins, Keanu helps guide him to the places he wants to go and continues learning even more destinations.

Keanu has also settled in with the family’s other dog, Cooper, who McDermott said adjusted well to his new brother. The Lab has become a favorite with the family’s daughters too. McDermott said Keanu likes waking the girls for school with kisses and by jumping onto the bed. He also said people regularly comment on the dog’s expressive face, especially the way he seems to communicate with his eyebrows.

More than mobility

For McDermott, the biggest change has been the return of independence. He said Keanu has given him the freedom to do something many people take for granted: step outside alone. He also said the dog has made it possible, when he is out with his family, to go shopping and walk on his own.

That new independence has extended into another important part of his life, his ministry. McDermott said Keanu goes everywhere with the ministry and its outreach efforts and is well known among the people they serve.

The dog accompanies him on college campuses and at a recurring event called Pull in for Prayer, which McDermott holds twice a month. There, he stands with a sign inviting people to pull over for prayer, while Keanu stays patiently at his side and helps him through the event. McDermott also brings Keanu to community outreach appearances and educational efforts about guide dogs.

In those settings, Keanu does more than assist with travel. McDermott said the dog helps draw people to their table, opening conversations that might not start otherwise. For a man whose life once narrowed so suddenly, that is part of the quiet payoff in this story. Keanu did not erase what happened in 2023. What he did was help McDermott move through the world again with greater confidence, connection, and room to serve others.

McDermott now encourages people with vision needs to think seriously about getting a guide dog and working with Guiding Eyes for the Blind. His message is not only about mobility. In his view, people do not just come home with a working dog. They come home with a new family member, one who is invested in every step.
