Why Stella and Mabel’s First Leaf Dive Has Become an Autumn Tradition for Dog Lovers

Stella and Mabel do not need much to make people smile, but every autumn they have one routine that stands out above the rest. The two yellow Labradors have become seasonal favorites for the way they hurl themselves into towering leaf piles that Jody builds in their Maine yard.

The moment that defines the tradition is wonderfully simple. Jody gathers up fallen leaves across his yard and shapes them into huge piles. Stella and Mabel wait nearby, and then, once they get the signal, they spring forward and vanish into the leaves.

That burst of excitement has been charming people online since 2015. One second the dogs are poised at the edge of the pile, and the next they are buried in autumn color, sending leaves in every direction. It is the kind of scene that feels instantly familiar to anyone who has ever watched a dog turn an ordinary backyard into the best place on earth.

For Stella and Mabel, it is not a one-jump event. The piles become a playground. They leap, dig in, and tunnel through the leaves with the sort of enthusiasm that makes a seasonal ritual feel fresh every year.

A surprisingly careful setup for a very joyful mess

In the clip below, that annual routine returns with the energy people have come to expect from Stella and Mabel.

What makes the tradition even sweeter is how much work goes into it before the dogs ever take their first dive. Jody does not just rake up leaves and call it a day. He tries to keep the piles in the condition the dogs seem to enjoy most, with the dry, crisp texture that gives them that rustling sound as the Labs plunge through.

To do that, he has used a hair dryer to take moisture out of the leaves. He also covers the piles with a tent so they stay dry. It is a lot of effort for something that many people would think of as a short-lived backyard activity, but for Jody the preparation is part of the point. If the leaves are ready, Stella and Mabel can have the kind of play they clearly love.

That care turns a common fall chore into something much more personal. The raking, drying, and covering are all in service of a scene that lasts only moments at a time, but those moments are the whole reason the tradition exists.

More than one way to enjoy a leaf pile

The famous jumps are only part of Stella and Mabel’s autumn routine. Once the piles are in place, the dogs use them in all sorts of ways. They play hide-and-seek. They stretch out on top of the leaves. They also pop their heads up from inside the pile in a pose Jody calls the "Periscope of Hope."

That little head-above-the-leaves look has become one of the signatures of their fall playtime. It captures the same appeal as the dives themselves. There is no complicated setup on the dogs’ side, no trick to understand, no training sequence to admire. It is just two Labradors having a very good time in a pile of leaves, and somehow that is more than enough.

Over the years, the videos have traveled far beyond their yard in Maine. Social media helped introduce Stella and Mabel to a broad audience, and TV news coverage did the same. The appeal is easy to understand. People are not only watching two dogs jump into leaves. They are returning to a tradition that feels dependable, cheerful, and refreshingly uncomplicated.

Why this yearly ritual keeps landing with people

Part of the reason Stella and Mabel’s leaf-pile adventures connect so strongly is that they offer a small break from everything else. For many viewers, the dogs’ play has become a welcome reset, a reminder that joy does not always need to come from anything elaborate or expensive. Sometimes it really can come from a yard, a rake, and two eager Labs.

Jody also sees something deeper in it. He knows dogs do not share the same long lives as the people who love them, which makes the time spent with them feel especially important. Watching Stella and Mabel throw themselves into each chance to play reinforces that feeling.

Their example points to a way of living that many people recognize immediately in dogs. They are not worrying about what comes next or revisiting what already happened. They are focused on the fun in front of them. In this case, that fun happens to be a leaf pile kept dry with a tent and, when needed, even a hair dryer.

That is what gives the tradition its staying power. Yes, Stella and Mabel’s dives are funny. Yes, the images of them surfacing from the leaves are adorable. But the ritual also reflects something lasting about companionship and making memories on purpose. Every autumn, Jody puts in the work, the dogs do the rest, and people who follow along get a gentle reminder that some of life’s best moments are also the simplest.
