Frank the Tank the Dachshund Could Hardly Shuffle at 37 Pounds. His New Family Is Helping Him Get His Life Back
Frank the Tank did not arrive at his new home as a punchline to his nickname. The nearly 10-year-old Dachshund weighed 37 pounds, his belly dragged on the floor, and even the simplest trip across a room took real effort.
When Frank first came home, everyday dog life had to be adjusted to what his body could handle. Walks were out of the question. Potty breaks were short, and time outside was limited to gentle chances to sniff around the yard. Indoors, his family looked for small ways to keep him moving, even if that only meant following a trail of treats from one spot to another.
That was the starting point for the dog now known online as Frank the Tank. He had ended up in animal control after his previous owner went to jail, and Minnesota Basset Rescue stepped in to help. In July, Dots Farm adopted him and began the slow, steady job of helping him become healthier and more comfortable. Dots Farm is part of Contented Critters in Ely, Minnesota, and from the beginning, Frank's new family knew his progress would depend on patience, consistency, and a lot of encouragement.

Small steps started adding up
The early victories were modest, but they mattered. Frank was not a dog who could suddenly leap into an exercise routine. He was a dog who had to be coaxed into motion a little at a time. Every shuffle across the floor, every careful trip outside, every extra step counted.
Those efforts showed up on the scale surprisingly quickly. In his first month with the family, Frank lost seven pounds. For a dog who had been struggling with basic movement, that was a major change. It meant the work was doing more than trimming a number. It was beginning to give him a little more freedom inside his own body.
A month and a half into his new routine, Frank had gone from 37 pounds to 24. His family noticed a difference that was easy to see without weighing him at all. His belly, which had been dragging along the floor, was getting closer to clearing it. They joked that they could finally see light under the tunnel. One supporter put a nickname spin on the whole thing, cheering Frank for going from "Tank" to "Swank."
His goal is still lower, around 17 pounds, so nobody in his family is acting like the job is done. But reaching 24 pounds in that span gave them something concrete to celebrate. Frank was moving better, looking different, and proving that progress for him did not have to come in giant, dramatic leaps to be meaningful.
A routine built around movement and comfort
Frank's family has been creative about turning normal parts of the day into chances for gentle activity. Instead of setting down a bowl and calling it dinner, they introduced a rolling food ball that makes him nudge it around to release kibble. It adds motion to mealtime, even if Frank apparently was not especially impressed when the new system first appeared.
Swimming has become part of the plan too. Supporters donated a pool and a flotation device to help him, along with food, sweaters, and other supplies. For a dog carrying extra weight, the pool offers a way to stay active without asking his joints to handle the same strain as some other exercise would.
There have been useful health updates along the way as well. Tests for Cushing's syndrome and thyroid disease both came back negative. Frank also has fatty lumps around his chest, and his family has been told those are expected to shrink as he continues to lose weight. Surgery for excess skin may eventually be considered, but that is not the priority right now. The focus remains on helping him keep going in the right direction, one manageable change at a time.
The sweetest part has nothing to do with pounds
For dog lovers, the most endearing thing about Frank's story may be that the dog underneath all those physical challenges never seemed to disappear. Even when moving was hard, he was still affectionate. He still wanted cuddles. He still wanted attention. He still wanted to be close to his people.
That side of Frank has stayed front and center through everything. He loves belly rubs, enjoys snuggling, and has also developed a very clear method for requesting help. From his bed, he howls until somebody comes to lift him up. His mom jokes that it is not hard to tell who usually wins that exchange.
That detail says a lot about what makes Frank's progress feel so shareable. This is a weight-loss story, but it is also a story about comfort, care, and a dog who now has people committed to helping him through every stage of it. He still has more work ahead before he reaches the target his family has set. But he no longer has to face that road alone.
For Frank, each small milestone means a little more mobility, a little more ease, and a little more chance to enjoy ordinary life. Whatever number he eventually reaches, he has already gained something just as important: a safe home where even the smallest victory is noticed, and where a once struggling Dachshund gets to be cherished every step of the way.
