Tiny Kitten Saved From I-275 Shoulder in Florida Finds a Home With Deputy Who Rescued Him
A 5-week-old kitten ended up in a very bad spot on Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County, Florida, and the rescue turned into a small, tense chase along the shoulder. The tiny cat, later named Dash, is now safe and has been adopted by the family of one of the deputies who helped catch him.
The rescue happened Tuesday on the southbound side of I-275, where Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted the kitten in distress and stopped to help. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper also came to the scene after a driver, Donna Watson, called in to report the cat.
Deputy-worn camera video shared by the sheriff’s office shows just how tricky the save was. The deputy and the trooper ran after the kitten along the highway shoulder before finally getting hold of him. For cat people, it is an all-too-familiar problem in a much scarier setting: a tiny, frightened kitten deciding that the humans trying to help are somehow the bigger threat.
Watson watched the rescue and became emotional as it unfolded. In the video, she can be heard urging the kitten not to head into traffic and saying she knew he was scared. After the kitten was secured, she tearfully thanked the rescuers.
The little survivor was given the name Dash, which feels fitting after his sprint beside the interstate. According to the sheriff’s office, he has since been adopted by the deputy’s family. The agency also said Dash is safe and well-fed.

If you find a kitten outdoors

A veterinary check is important for parasites, eye or breathing problems, and age estimates, because care changes quickly as kittens grow.
Bringing a found kitten home
Keep a found kitten separate from resident pets at first. Use a quiet room, soft bedding, fresh water, and an easy to clean litter tray. Wash hands after handling, especially before touching other animals.
Social handling matters. Gentle, short sessions help kittens get used to people, sounds, and daily routines. If you cannot keep the kitten, contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic soon. Rules for found animals and foster care vary by area, so local advice is worth getting early.
